After returning from a rejuvenating week with friends, I'm diving back into work, eager to catch up. Among the highlights of my return was the joy of reading about Mitie's inaugural Apprenticeship Awards. As Penny Mordaunt aptly put it, "Apprenticeships are the backbone of a skilled workforce, providing individuals with the opportunity to learn, earn and contribute to their communities." I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the winners across our business, with special recognition for the outstanding achievements of Keaton Leith and Sam Berry from Mobile Technical Services. Keaton, a Level 3 Refrigeration Air and Conditioning and Heat Pump Engineering Technician Apprentice from Manchester, clinched the top prize for Technical Apprentice of the Year, while Sam, an Operations Manager from Stockport, was rightly awarded Apprenticeship Champion of the Year. Such accomplishments are not just a testament to the hard work and dedication of these individuals but also reflect the exceptional leadership and support provided by Alan Robinson - CIWFM, Head of Operations, and Chris Thompson, Operations Director, of the winning business unit. Having been a technical apprentice myself, I understand firsthand the significance of apprenticeships in laying the groundwork for lifelong learning and career advancement. Indeed, the journey doesn't end with these qualifications; there are always opportunities for further growth, be it through management qualifications or advanced technical training. Business and technical apprenticeships offer a myriad of benefits for both employers and employees alike. From providing a steady stream of skilled talent to fostering personal and professional development, apprenticeships play a pivotal role in driving mutual growth and productivity within the workforce. As National Apprenticeship Week wraps up, I'm looking back on the past year spent diving into the world of apprenticeships. Starting in this role I had no idea how much I’d get to work on topics of L&D. It has been a positive surprise though, given that continuous learning was actually the topic of my Master’s dissertation!   Working closely with the UK apprenticeships system has been both rewarding and enlightening. The complexity of the system is undeniable, yet there is so much opportunity in this space. Considering the current state of social mobility within the financial services industry it is important we continue working on increasing the numbers of apprentice starts. Apprenticeships offer a way for people from different backgrounds to start meaningful careers, bringing diversity and inclusivity to workplaces. They are also a brilliant way to upskill current staff, as the career stories posted on the Association of British Insurers page this week shows.   Best part about this week has been seeing so many familiar faces at all the events and webinars. As this week is Apprenticeships Week, we’re highlighting colleagues who chose P&O Ferries to begin or develop a career in their chosen subject. 2023 saw a big increase in colleagues undertaking development #apprenticeships and joining the business as an apprentice. Molly Milne, who joined us as a Legal Apprentice in 2023, had this to say: “The apprenticeship route is a great way to study and still receive a salary at the same time. I learn best with a more hands-on approach and the combination of studying and working during an apprenticeship allows me to apply the theory of my studies to my job role. I really wanted to develop my career in a line of work that interested me, and being offered the employment via an apprenticeship allows me to obtain my qualifications whilst gaining valuable experience, to develop the skills learnt and expand my career opportunities.” Mike Willis is a Crew Development Officer who has been with P&O Ferries for over 30 years – he began a Level 3 Learning & Development Practitioner apprenticeship in 2023 and commented: “I chose the L&D Practitioner, to help focus and finetune the skills I have picked up on the job practically and to gain a formal qualification within this field. The apprenticeship has given me more confidence, knowing that the methods and skills that I use every day can help to make my role easier, to co-ordinate the team and to drive better results. I recommend anyone thinking of an apprenticeship to go for it! It's #nationalapprenticeshipweek, and here at Pharos we're proud employers of three workshop apprentices. As an integral part of the maintenance operation, Josh Burns, William Dougal and Owen Wilson are two and a half years in to their four year apprenticeship. With an emphasis on quality, health & safety and environmental sustainability, our apprentices learn on the job. They are developing valuable hands-on skills as well as the experience that comes with simply being in a professional workplace.   Owen comments: "Looking back at my time at Pharos, I have grown in confidence and ability and feel a great sense of purpose in my work.". Similarly, Josh says: "This apprenticeship has helped me develop vital skills and knowledge in an industry I'm interested in.". Will's outlook is positive: "I'm excited for the remainder of my apprenticeship, and the opportunities that lie ahead.". Pharos' Founder and CEO Phil W. remarks: "Seeing Josh, Will, and Owen grow and develop their skills under our guidance is incredibly rewarding. I’m passionate about creating diversity of thought in the Railway to positively disrupt established ways of thinking. Apprenticeships are a great way of bringing new and fresh ways of thinking.   This is why I was so excited to celebrate #nationalapprenticeshipweek - it’s a fantastic way to raise awareness of our employability and skills programme to a whole new audience and I strongly believe that apprentices provide a fresh perspective that every organisation needs to thrive.   I was proud that last week we were able to announce a significant 50% increase in the number of females starting an apprenticeship course with us. This is a really positive figure and supports a personal ambition of mine to nurture a greater diversity of thinking within GTR and the wider rail industry, which will help us to innovate and improve at every level for our customers.    Since 2017, we’ve supported more than 500 people to study apprenticeships with us, helping them to harness and develop their skills. And this is having a real impact, with our apprenticeships scheme delivering more that £16 million in social value in a year.   It’s been great to see the importance I place on apprenticeships echoed by The Go-Ahead Group who we joined on Tuesday to attend the Parliamentary Apprenticeships Fair with other apprenticeship employers from the UK. Our fantastic colleagues have also been sharing their experiences with the media, taking part in radio interviews to discuss what it’s like to study an apprenticeship with GTR.   I’ve seen first-hand throughout my time in the rail industry the positive impact apprenticeships have in helping people to upskill and progress in their career. ✨Meet the Apprentice Series: Featuring Aaron Dougherty ✨ Today, we are excited to introduce you to Aaron Dougherty, who has been excelling in the Airside Agent Apprenticeship at City of Derry Airport for the past 9 months. Aaron is a 19-year-old who transitioned directly from Foyle School into his apprenticeship. Knowing early on that university wasn't the path for him, Aaron chose a hands-on approach to kickstart his career. As you can see, Aaron is thriving in his role, mastering all the duties expected of an Airside Agent. This position demands adaptability and focus, and Aaron handles it all with passion and enthusiasm. Aaron's journey is a testament to how apprenticeships can be a highly valued educational process, offering practical, real-world experience. It's important to note that apprenticeships aren't just for school leavers. You can start an apprenticeship at any age and at any stage of your career, making it a versatile option for upskilling and career development.
