As we gear up for another school year, it's crucial to have conversations with our kids about staying safe from substance use. Here’s how you can help them navigate this important topic: 1️. Open the Dialogue: Use this back-to-school season to talk openly about the risks of drugs and alcohol. Listen to their concerns and provide factual information. 2️. Stay Informed: Arm yourself with knowledge about different substances and their effects. Be ready to answer their questions honestly. 3. Lead by Example: Show your kids healthy ways to manage stress and have fun without relying on substances. Your actions speak louder than words! 4. Stay Connected: Keep lines of communication open throughout the school year and be a supportive presence in their lives. Let's empower our children to make informed decisions and enjoy a safe and successful school year. Afterschool programs, like SOAR Afterschool Program, provide a student with hundreds of hours each school year of art, STEM, social and emotional development, sports, trying new things, confidence building, problem solving skill building, fun, learning how to be a friend and leader, and chances to simply BE A KID. Surrounded by caring and equipped staff, students not only have a fun and safe place to be and learn, but they've got trustworthy mentors to listen and guide them through the challenges of life. Do you remember how important that was to you as a kid? Investing in SOAR Afterschool Program tackles the issue of student mental well-being, creatively and effectively!
Rising concerns over social media's impact on young people's mental well-being have spurred leaders to introduce protective measures and legislation. Our own Jodi Grant offers a solution: "Make the afterschool programs that engage and educate them, filling those otherwise-idle hours with constructive activities, available to all. This common sense, cost efficient solution is a win for our children and youth, our working parents, and our communities. " https://lnkd.in/gskMCe9B

Engage members are invited to help with research to find out what our sector is doing to provide for children who are not accessing school. This includes those who are Electively Home Educating but also a growing number of children who do not attend school for a variety of other reasons, including 'school refusal' or 'emotionally based school avoidance'. These can be the result of undiagnosed SEND, unmet needs, anxiety, bullying and other challenges. Fill out survey: https://buff.ly/3uQJwTf

Summer is in full swing! Schools are closed, the weather is warm, and kids are enjoying some well-deserved time to relax and have fun. While summer break gives kids free time to play, socialize, and rest, it's important to know that this is also the time of year when kids are most likely to experiment with substances. According to Bradford Health Services, multiple studies have shown that alcohol and drug use among teens significantly increases during the summer months. By the end of August, almost 1 million teenagers will have had their first drink, and on an average summer day, around 4,500 teens will smoke cigarettes or marijuana for the first time. To keep summer fun safe and substance-free, set clear rules with your child, supervise them when you're able to, monitor them when they spend time away from home, and stay involved so they know you care about their health and well-being. #MentalHealth #MentalHealthMatters #Summer #SummerVacation #SummerBreak #SelfCare #MentalWellness #MontgomeryCountyAllianceForPrevention #MontCoPA #PreventionHappensHere #Prevention #PAprevention #MontCoPrevention #MAPtoPrevention

💚 Program Director I 💼 Private Practice Owner I 🎙️Keynote Speaker I 🧠 LinkedIn Social Work and Leadership Top Voice I💯Go-Giver 🗣️ [ I Help People and Help People to Help People!]
I was recently asked during a presentation, "How many days of missed school should trigger an intervention for school phobia?" 🤔 It prompted me to dive deeper into the topic of prevention. But what's the actual answer? The truth is, this is the wrong question. Instead, we should be asking ourselves now and in August, before school starts: "Who will need the most interventions?" or "Who are we concerned about?" If each of our guidance counselors or CST members asked themselves who they’re worried about having attendance issues this year, I’m sure they’d have a list. 📋 We need to start working on that list before school even begins. We should be in contact with these kids and their families, helping to build exposure plans so they’re ready for day one. 🎒 For more insights on how to prepare, keep following for more content! #SchoolPhobia #Prevention #Education #StudentSupport
