What stops a Microsoft Teams Room comprising 100% Microsoft Certified components from delivering great user experiences? The best equipment cannot overcome poor room conditions. As technophiles we’d like to think that, for example, a fancy audio system will always overcome poor room acoustics. It’s an unfortunate truth that a single, well placed car speaker in a room with great acoustics might sound better and more natural than an expensive audio system with the DSP set to 11 [gratuitous Spinal Tap reference - with apologies]. It’s tough. The reality is that the built environment is a siloed concern, where facilities management controls lighting, room finishes etc, namely all the elements that can - and do - damage hybrid workspace user experiences. (A large part of my consulting remit is developing practical strategies to bridge such structural divides.) The elephant in the hybrid room is actually a vacuum: the package of disciplines, standards and certifications that create great user experiences and allow these wonderful certified MTR devices to unlock their full potential. In Greg Jeffreys Consulting we also teach and facilitate all parts of the Microsoft, IT and AV ecosystems on how to optimise rooms in order to get the best from your technology. In person and remote training packages are available, in addition to consulting on standards, room design (and troubleshooting), displays and lighting. Meet the EPOS EXPAND Capture 5 & EXPAND Vision 1M Pack. This fantastic bundle is perfect for organizations that need to equip huddle, small, or medium sized meeting rooms. For small rooms on a small budget, it's a great pick as a BYOM starter pack. Better yet, it won't comprise future plans as it can be built into full room systems. The Capture 5 is AI ready for Microsoft Teams Room and CoPilot. As a Certified Intelligent Speaker, with seven noise cancelling microphones, it can accurately capture and transcribe who said what in the fastest pace meetings. It makes recaps and follow-ups a breeze. The Vision 1M is tuned for crystal clear and natural video, helping remote guests stay focused and feel included with true to life meeting experiences. Intelligent picture framing powered by EPOS AI gives the perfect view in dynamic meetings. Check it out for yourself or ask me for a demo running on MTR-W. https://lnkd.in/ekjdWR33 #PowerOfAudio #BrainAdapt #MicrosoftTeamsRooms #CoPilot

So what about spatial audio for Microsoft Teams Rooms? It’s here. Are you using it? Here are some thoughts. When asked what he thought about Western civilisation, Mahatma Gandhi reportedly replied that he thought it would be a very good idea! I think the AV industry is rather in that position regarding spatial audio. I’m observing relatively few people dipping their toes in the water. Is this fair? There are even Microsoft-certified solutions out there, such as the partnership between Q-SYS and Sennheiser (whose image I have ‘decorated’ below). So what’s the issue? I think one part of this is the nature of hybrid: the room you’re in is only half the picture. The other half is the remote room (or rooms). In practice it’s all too easy to be ‘this-room-centric’. In the GJC heuristic EASE that we use to help clients work granularly towards exceptional results (Environment, Audio, Screen, Equity), that last E for Equity refers not just to in-room equity, but equity for remote participants. A for Audio is on its own because it’s so damn important. So what’s the first baby step to take? My suggestion is that it’s implemented first in ‘peer to peer’ scenarios, namely rooms that are mainly used to connect with other rooms in the same organisation, preferably rooms of similar size and specification. It's a safe way of closing the transmit/receive circle - full duplex - and the fairest evaluation scenario. Any chance of some chat below in the Comments? Would really like to hear what the likes of Harald Steindl have so say about this - and all you other audiophiles I look up to and learn from. And as I’ve purloined the image below from Q-SYS, it’s only fair to link out to them. Please see the links below in Comments section. You might also want to look at the blog from their Gary Evans; he puts out some useful stuff. Can Copilot AI entice people back into the office? Providing an environment that is more conducive to collaborative working and conferencing is seen as one of the keys to getting people back into the office for longer periods – and Microsoft Copilot AI capabilities, when combined with the power and versatility of Surface Hub 3, could now provide part of the answer! This is a really insightful take, Greg Jeffreys. It’s certainly true that a centre camera provides that crucial reference point for remote participants no matter how many other cameras are in play. From a design perspective, it can sometimes feel like there’s always some trade off or push back, especially when it comes to positioning and making sure everyone is represented fairly on screen. Aura’s new approach sounds genuinely promising, and I’m looking forward to seeing how their new processing method impacts the market in the next couple of years. #hybridwork #collaboration #meetingequity #videoconferencing #innovation #audiovisual #AVdesign #teamcollaboration

Even multi-camera systems in Microsoft Teams Rooms need a centre camera. Here’s why - plus an exciting new development. Although I’m enthusiastic about our consulting assignments with multi-camera systems, using them does not take away the need for a centre camera, either as a main view or to provide an essential context view for remote participants. So this means having a camera that is both properly specified - and properly positioned. (At a recent test with various cameras, the first thing someone said was ‘you can see who has bald spots on our heads!’ So, it might be convenient to position a camera up high on the wall - but convenient for whom?!) However, the uncomfortable truth about the centre camera is that it’s not ideal, particularly for the classic ‘bowling alley’ type long tables. The double whammy here is that it’s the most senior people or person who’s likely to be sat at the head of the table. They can look small and insignificant compared with everyone else in the frame. The team at Aura has come up with a fresh look at the VC camera problem and their solution is revolutionary. They have a patented technology which performs ‘foveal’ processing to equalise the size of everyone around the table for the view of remote participants. Aura’s Equal-i IP and patents cover a range of solutions which address this ongoing issue. I’d expect to see it being adopted by leading manufacturers in 2025. #microsoftteamsrooms #avtweeps #hybridmeetings #avusergroup #ltsmg #schoms

Great logic Greg. However it seems that as a precursor for spatial audio, one needs to accomplish a reasonable level of room based spatial video for directional audio to be effective. Well done Signature Rooms certainly qualify but most camera solutions that place room participants on individual tiles and randomly place them stacked into a single 16 x 9 tile fail in that regard. Aura Presence Equal-i technology solves the problem of "bowling alley" people capture and permits true spatial audio similar to Signature Rooms.

Shiny, reflective display screens are real quality killers in Microsoft Teams Rooms and all hybrid meeting and teaching spaces. Here’s why. And here's how to fix the problem. This short video shows a major project at Glasgow University using ALR (ambient light rejecting) VDL Supernova projection screens to create standards-optimised displays of the very highest quality and the very lowest running costs. Hybrid meetings’ higher objective is to break through the fourth wall: to make in-person and remote participants forget the tech chain that joins them and to interact naturally and spontaneously with each other, using verbal and non-verbal cues. In simulation, we think in terms of ‘cues’: display elements and components that help or hinder users to suspend their disbelief and to fully engage with the experience and content. Shiny display screens, creating distracting 'veiling' reflections is but one example whereby attention to detail and a disaggregated approach (breaking things down into the right component level) can boost user experience - and not cost you a penny. Test spaces are essential. Try before you buy. Flat panels are commodity purchases now, so use simple and practical selection criteria like these to create better meeting and teaching spaces. The Visual Displays team uses unique IP and standards-curated calculations to deliver guaranteed display results to end users and consultants via their integrators. The White Paper ‘MTRs - The Bigger Picture’ unpacks this subject in detail.
