📢 “It’s a game changer. It will completely turn on its head the way that we’ve been looking at the homelessness crisis.” This week we opened the first two grant programs under our $100m Homelessness Innovation Fund (HIF) and briefed almost 400 stakeholders on this ‘open gate’ for ideas and innovation to help us genuinely address homelessness and get people into long-term secure housing sooner. 💡 Part of the $6.6 billion Building Homes for NSW program announced in the 2024-25 NSW Budget, the intent of the HIF is to enable and support service innovation to better respond to the current crisis and begin moving us towards system transformation. Our first two grant programs are Reforming Temporary Accommodation, and Service Reform and Innovation. Both HIF grant programs remain open until 30 April 2025, with assessment of applications to be incremental. The HIF has been developed in consultation with our key industry partners, including Shelter NSW, Homelessness NSW, Yfoundations and Domestic Violence NSW. It feels like I am seeing articles on a weekly basis announcing proposals to cut services that are a life line to those experiencing homelessness. Now here I am posting mine. Please read, share and be curious by clicking the link for more details. Hampshire is yet another area facing ‘difficult decisions’ to meet a financial deficit. The impact of this proposal will be devastating if it goes ahead from March 2025. I am baffled, it feels as a sector we know so much about what interventions can work to end the revolving door of homelessness and ensure clients are receiving the right support at the right time but, as a society we are still getting it so wrong. I wish these services were not needed and that local data evidenced there was enough of the right type of housing to support clients to live independently. But that is not the case, these accommodation based services are still needed by approximately 350 people per year. There is no magic wand that I can see over the next 12 months, the number of people experiencing homelessness is increasing so where will these people turn to for support? Our district and borough housing teams are already dealing with an increasing demand, how can they provide accommodation to this number of people when Homelessness Prevention Grants are being reduced and RSI funding only runs until the very date these services could end?

Housing insecurity is one of Australia’s most challenging and topical social issues. Governments at all levels are investing billions of dollars in responses, yet at community level there’s despair and frustration because services simply cannot keep up with the volume of presentations or provide the necessary support for vulnerable people to break the cycle of homelessness. Within the Ballarat region, we cannot ignore how this issue permeates across social issues. The foundation’s Vital Signs report found rates of violence against women in Ballarat far exceeds state and national averages. Family violence is the number one cause of homelessness in women in Australia. The projects funded though The Ballarat Foundation innovation grant program this year captured the assessment panel’s attention because they looked at this complex social challenge and devised responses which will change in Ballarat how we support those who are homeless, and those at risk of homelessness. Our organisation strategy is centred on supporting and enabling more local projects just like these. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s Grants Pass ruling, a decision which effectively criminalizes homelessness, the McGregor Fund stands with leaders and advocates in the fight ahead for our unhoused friends and neighbors.   The City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Johnson decision allows jurisdictions to fine and arrest individuals sleeping in public, even when no designated shelter is available.
