My monthly pieces for Editor & Publisher (E&P) Magazine tend towards rants -- mostly because I think #PublicMedia need to move with greater urgency to address our glaring audience, distribution and financial issues. This month, though, I wanted to write about something hopeful -- and creative: A tech-driven content-sharing collaboration in California, led by KQED (with the intellectual heft of my old Passport colleague Tim Olson. OPB's newly retired CEO, Steve Bass, wrote eloquently recently about how we need to get back to our roots in LOCAL content (versus simply being the pass-through distributor for PBS and NPR). The challenge, of course, is that local content is expensive. The KQED/DML project can be part of a metro- or region-wide solution to that challenge. I'd encourage you to check it out. In our final Media Bulletin of 2023, we look back at a year of dizzying change that is set to continue into 2024. As much as the year was a "maelstrom of change" to quote Lucy Kueng (Küng), we agree with her that publishers who have a clear strategy focused on enriching the lives of their audiences have never had more opportunity. However, for publishers who have focused on the volume end of the volume-value continuum, it is time to rethink their strategies.
