Jaime Cabrera, thank you for hosting me on the latest episode of Confessions of a Creative Director. We tackled a serious topic, “Advertising professionals falling out of love with advertising and the advertising life”. But, hopefully we served up some ideas that will inspire others and rekindle the flame.
It really is an exciting time for creativity and our industry.

What's a Junkie quote?
A Junkie quote or in full terms, an Ad Junkie's quote is one that you as an advertising lover, fan, or practitioner live by. You apply it to your work, life and everything in between.
An Ad Junkie's quote helps you doing those rough time when you question why you ever got on this slave ship called advertising. It reminds you that the good times are not too far ahead and gives you a hand in dealing with what ever situation you find yourself in.
In my experience, having one is very key as it keeps me grounded and going no matter the condition. Since the beginning of Advertising Anonymous Podcast , I have heard some of the strongest and just plain funny Junkie quotes. Some of these quotes were even made under the pressure of a full bladder 🤣. Maybe I will do a compilation and drop it soon.

STOP copying competitor ads!!
You can generate hundreds of ideas per day!!
Australian Strategy Genius John James was kind enough to host me on his Champagne Strategy podcast to talk why Mimetics are so popular today, what happens if it continues, and how you can zig when everyone else zags...
Spoiler: BE CREATIVE!
He teased out my step-by-step process to come up with genuinely CREATIVE ad ideas.
Ideas that will crush your competition in the ad auction place.
No more last-minute Foreplay or Atria or MagicBriefs panics.
What do you think?
Worth it to effort your own ad ideas or too easy to copy others?

If you’ve ever asked your clients what they like about your agency, have you ever noticed that they say some pretty generic stuff?
Things like ‘going the extra mile’ or that you ‘feel like an extension of the team’?
It's all very nice - albeit often grounded in you over-servicing them - but not much help if you’re thinking about how to stand out.
So a lot of agencies just aren’t that clear on what clients really want. In which case, you’ll love this episode of The Immortal Life of Agencies.
Our guest is none other than David Meikle.
A classic ‘poacher turned gamekeeper’, he was previously an agency leader, working for Grey and latterly running Ogilvy in Russia, and now he’s a search consultant.
David’s also a compassionate, innovative and rigorous thinker about the advertising and marketing industry, which you’ll know if you’ve read either of his brilliant books - the seminal ‘How to Buy a Gorilla’ and, most recently, ‘Tuning Up’.
So when David - as he tends to - brings some creative thinking to the topic of what clients REALLY want from agencies, I’d urge you to take a listen.
Feast your ears on a veritable treasure trove of his characteristic warmth and insight.
Highlights include - but are not limited to - the following:
💷 What agencies misunderstand about profit
🎁 Why he disagrees with the trend for more productised agency offers
🤝🏻 How to strike a fairer deal with Procurement
🫨 A new way to think about agency differentiation.
There are also some useful shoutouts to agencies we know are smashing it - and what it is that they’re doing differently.
(Spoiler - take a bow, Jenny Biggam, Liam Mullins and the team at the7stars, as well as Lucy Jameson, Natalie Graeme and Nils Leonard at Uncommon Creative Studio.)

“I tried advertising in a magazine, but it didn’t work!”
Here’s what likely happened:
You probably didn’t give it enough time to work…or season. Once you put ads out there, you have to give it time. Set it and forget it. If you did that and it was a no bueno, then…
🛑 You had the wrong message
🛑 The wrong people
🛑 The wrong amount of times
It could be one of these, 2 out of the three, or all three…
Let me help you with this! Let’s dance!

Sidenote: I’m on the production crew of a new video and audio podcast with a prominent national media personality, and this picture is me on set. If you’re interested in advertising on this show or you want more details, let me know :). The first episode drops Feb 14.
