One day, I was tasked with performing a venipuncture procedure for a patient. My objective was clear: to obtain at least a 2ml blood sample for a packed cell volume (PCV) analysis. As I began the process of finding the patient’s vein, I noticed the more prominent veins in her right hand, I took this moment as an opportunity to engage her in a conversation. I explained the theory of “use and disuse,” highlighting how the parts of her body she used more, like her right hand, tended to be slightly bigger and featured more prominent features. To my delight, she found this explanation fascinating and remained engrossed in the topic. Throughout our discussion, I carefully inserted the needle and collected the blood sample. What amazed me was her obliviousness to the procedure; she never felt a thing. She admitted that she had been looking away but was amazed at how our conversation had distracted her from any discomfort. I hadn’t intended to distract her, only to alleviate any awkward silences, but in doing so, she mistook me, a mere intern, for a certified professional. This experience taught me the vital role of confidence and the power of establishing rapport with patients. Not only did it help put the patient at ease, but it also made her experience far more pleasant. It reinforced my belief in the importance of prioritizing patient safety and taking the time to get to know each patient individually. The lesson here is clear: Confidence, patient rapport, and understanding are essential elements in the world of medical laboratory science. Recently, I presented on the effect of exogenous substances on tissue quality and remedies to avoid the production of poor quality slides, one of the four seminar presentations required for my one year internship program in FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTER, OWO, ONDO STATE.  Exploring the effects of exogenous substances on tissue quality is crucial in understanding how our environment and external factors can influence histological samples. By discussing remedies to prevent poor quality slides in histopathology, we enhance the accuracy of diagnostic procedures and research findings, ultimately improving patient care and scientific advancements in the medical field.

I am ecstatic to be able to say that I completed my internship at Centro Medico del Dolore in Lugano, working under the guidance of Dr. Thomas Lacina, which I would like to thank for this incredible opportunity. Dr. Lacina’s philosophy is that inflammation is what prevents the human body’s natural ability to heal itself. Therefore, my time here focused on interventional radiology and minimally invasive therapy, where cortisone crystals are used to treat the troubled areas. By using radiology, the crystals are injected directly into the facets of the spine, especially where they are enlarged, non-triangular with a beak, and with spillage, as these indicate inflammation. This method, though not very common, should be more widely used as it provides instant positive feedback directly from patients, often allowing them to avoid complex surgeries. Additionally, we focused on infiltrations anywhere around the body, as it acts on the same principles. Dr. Lacina's dedication extends beyond his clinical work. As the founder of the Swiss Institute for Second Opinion in Medicine, he reassesses surgical indications and billing with an external lawyer, ensuring patients receive the most appropriate and transparent care. Witnessing this commitment firsthand has been truly inspiring. An ECG (electrocardiogram) machine is a medical device used to record the electrical activity of the heart over a period of time. It detects and records the electrical signals generated by the heart each time it beats, providing valuable information about heart rhythm and function. ECG machines are commonly used in hospitals, clinics, and doctor's offices to diagnose various heart conditions, such as arrhythmias, heart attacks, and abnormalities in the heart's structure. You will be able to practice presenting your cases and grow your problem-solving skills by using a logical approach This interactive session helps attendees develop a logical approach to clinical cases. The approach is commonly referred to as logical clinical problem-solving. It focuses on constructing a prioritized and specific problem list, identifying the body system involved, and using diagnostics to identify the lesion within the body system. Choice and interpretation of diagnostic tests will also be part of the focus. The session uses real-life cases either seen by one of the attendees or brought into the discussion by the instructor. Hello! I'm excited to share that I've concluded my 10-week internship at Vanderbilt University's Department of Biomedical Informatics. Looking back, it seems like the summer passed so quickly—yet I have learned so much from so many people. I want to thank Kim Unertl & Rischelle Jenkins for organizing this program and Brad Malin, Nicholas Jackson, & Victor Borza for their valuable mentorship this summer! Also, a special shoutout to my fellow interns for making the summer heat of Nashville not only bearable but enjoyable! If you're interested, here's a very, very, very, quick summary of my project this summer. THE PROJECT: Fairness in Dermatology Image Classification In the field of dermatology, physicians perform better on certain skin tones compared to others. Machine learning models also perform better on certain skin tones than others, which may be caused by imbalanced training data. We hypothesized that balancing our data with oversampling techniques and synthetic GAN-generated images would improve performance disparities across skin tones. I built a code framework to train/fine-tune CNN models and evaluate their performance/fairness on test sets (check the GitHub repo in my profile). Turns out that augmenting our training data with synthetic images may increase model performance while maintaining or even improving fairness. Very cool stuff! Reach out with questions!
