World Rare Disease Day is a crucial time to raise awareness and solidarity around lesser-known and often overlooked medical conditions. It is an opportunity to highlight the challenges faced by those living with rare diseases, from difficulty in diagnosis to the lack of effective treatments. Furthermore, this day highlights the importance of research, supporting affected communities and advocating for inclusive health policies, aiming to improve quality of life and promote equal access to medical care for all. The choice of the day — February 28 or 29, in leap years — is symbolic and refers to the unusual nature of the pathologies. The Ministry of Health determines that rare diseases are those that affect up to 65 people in every 100 thousand individuals or 1.3 in every 2 thousand individuals.
