Yesterday CHIRP published their annual digest! To compile this digest, Chirp goes through all of the reports they have recieved in 2023 and make a selection of the reports that are the most tutorial, after all, the goal is to learn from errors to prevent them from happening again. Chirp has ambassadors in a lot of countries but are looking for more ambassadors in more countries to obtain a maximal coverage worldwide. We all hope you’ll find this digest interesting and useful. Preparing to present at the Pacific Maritime Transport Alliance (PMTA) 24-25 July 2024. PMTA is a regional group that promotes regional cooperation, friendship and understanding between Pacific islands member ports and port users through mutual association, exchange of knowledge and the dissemination of information useful to port administrations. The purpose of the conference is to promote regional cooperation, friendship and understanding between member ports and port users through mutual alliances and the exchange of knowledge as well as the dissemination of information useful to port owners, operators, and users of port services. It is also to promote measures to increase efficiency, safety and to facilitate the harmonious development of ports in the Pacific region.

In part it is the prioritization of using subjective measures of performance over objective measures of character in the Officers’ fitnessreport system. The truth is competency can be taught, character can’t. Excusing early character flaws because of perceived superior performance is what in part leads to these catastrophic failures in command and under heavy public scrutany.

New JKO course focused on Information in Joint Operations - The purpose of the course is to familiarize the Joint Force with the Information Joint Function, Information in Joint Operations, and Operations in the Information Environment. You will be also introduced to the inherent informational aspects of activities.

The 1st Intersessional Working Group on the comprehensive review of the 1978 STCW Convention and Code is well underway! The scale of the work being undertaken at International Maritime Organization can be gauged by the following statistics: 22: The number of stakeholders submitting proposals to this session (counting the 27 EU Member States as a single bloc) which includes Member States, an Inter-Governmental Organisation (European Commission ) and consultant NGOs. 47: The number of documents submitted to this session and an additional 25 documents submitted in earlier IMO HTW Sub-Committee sessions. 600+: The number of proposals to be considered during this session. Most proposals cover Ch. I (135) which is mostly related to administrative matters; Ch. II (122) and III (155) which focusses on sea-time requirements, certification and competencies. We launched our second consultation https://bit.ly/3vjPuvT, a public comment period for you to give your feedback on the proposed standards for B Corp Certification and some of you may have already shared your thoughts. Until March 2024, you will have a chance to have your say on their clarity, attainability, and impact, in this second round of consultation. This next phase consists of a survey to capture detailed feedback and a series of virtual focus groups across multiple time zones for B Corps and aspiring B Corps. The dedicated focus group for our region is scheduled for Tuesday 13 February at 4pm Kenya time or 2pm CET. Participating in the focus groups will involve an estimated effort of almost 5 hours, and you may be eligible to receive an honorarium of USD 175 for your time and expertise.
