Too many beautiful and historic buildings have been lost to time, successive mining booms, and a lack of foresight and nurture. Restoring and evolving Perth’s buildings to meet modern technologies and regulations with Nokturnl is a multi-faceted experience. Utilising a building that has stood through generations lends its own atmosphere and personality to the new business, if treated respectfully. In fact, the need to manufacture edgy marketing material to attract an audience is greatly diminished, as the stories are already there - they just need uncovering and celebrating. Looking back through time in an old building provides cues for many aspects of a design - whether it’s the name (The Station, The Court Hotel, The Treasury, The Synagogue), the colour palette, architectural motifs, uniforms, lighting… Stepping into a space that encourages us to subconsciously connect our environment to something older and greater is both interesting and grounding. We like to feel the sense of comfort derived from being within walls that have stood for 100 years, yet layered with that is the sense of excitement and curiousity about how the space has been re-imagined. Working on projects that understand and support this idea is something I particularly enjoy, and look forward to bringing all the lessons learned into the forthcoming redevelopment of Liberty Theatre and its surrounds with the visionary Randal Humich - watch this space, the City of Perth is about to come alive 👀

The Jacksonville DIA has got to get creative and take more action! First, BLOW UP the old convention center and create a space worthwhile for corporations to see Jacksonville as a viable city for meeting space. As someone in the corporate world, working for major organizations across the country, not ONE time in 30+ years, have we ever considered Jacksonville for a major corporate meeting or convention. If you build it, they will come. "They", being major hotels, restaurants, local businesses, etc., that will be able to support an influx of corporate meetings and people. We have an Awesome airport, that is actually more affordable to fly than some major hubs, due to several competitive airlines. It's one of the only ways to create major revenue to attract employers able to create jobs in the downtown area. This can compete with the Town Center concepts and draw people/families out periodically from local neighborhood spots. With Khan's Four Seasons development, which will provide premier meeting space, lodging and retail, it will create a corridor along the interior of the river for further development. With those first two steps complete, bye-bye jail!!! - Buy the old Regency Mall and build a state-of-the-art jail to free up premier real estate downtown, then develop the center of the corridor. Thoughtful words on the possibilities and challenges with the notion of specialized districts as drivers of cultural economic development. As pointed out by the article's author, Jane Jacobs' premise that specialized urban districts are often flawed from the get-go is too often true with narrowly specialized districts with no cohesive vision or mission, as in the case of so called "restaurant parks". Mixed-use districts fair better in terms of marketability, cultural impact, and economic benefit but still often fall short of sustained impact. One aspect missing from many "district plans" is one of mission centricity. Is it better to create a public space that has something for everyone or a space that has a more defied and dedicated focus, while still possessing enough diversity of experience to be of interest to a larger audience? I look to the foundation of success for spaces such as Millennium Park--the dedication to the highest standards in what public art, performance, landscape, etc. is being presented while integrated appropriate heterogeneity so as to be of interest to the diversity of Chicago and visitors to the city. Such dedication to mission is difficult. The great race to the bottom line in public space and urban design and governance often means seeking the quickest return on investment and, therefore, filling public spaces with as many restaurants, retail spaces, events, activities, trinkets, features, and elements as possible. Such public spaces make an initial big splash, but often lack the mission cohesion that establishes a reputation. These spaces become "Instagramable" rather than recognized for being the community's leader in arts & cultural activities, fitness & well-being programs, or whatever focus areas are needed by the community. Mission centricity of public space is a tricky beast--well crafted and curated it can lead to sustained success but poorly guided it can lead to flash in the pan success and eventual relegation. #parks #parksandrecreation #artsandculture #urbanplanning #sustainedimpact #culturaleconomy
