On September 4, 2024, British Columbia introduced 10 pre-approved, royalty-free designs for municipalities to use, all aimed at speeding up the design process. But while this helps, it’s not enough to meet the demand for quicker home construction. That’s where modular housing comes in, as a faster and more efficient solution. This is the first video in our modular housing series, so stay tuned for what’s next!

This HE guide presents the business and social case for retrofit to provide homes, and contains a lot of appetising case studies. These are a bit thin on detail, and some of the recommendations (eg for the kind of project team you would need) I would like to add to (specialist conservation architects ecologists and environmental specialists for example). Based on a very quick reading there doesn't seem to be reference in particular to ecology ie habitat that older buildings provide, and how to manage that. But this is a welcome publication and readers will be able to build on it.

Very timely publication from Historic England. Tim Heatley, co-founder of developer Capital & Centric, said inquiries for conversion projects currently outnumber new building inquiries ‘by a factor of four’ 💪 https://lnkd.in/eMnA7gG5

Interesting Behavioral Economics - these homeowners do not see the value-for-money of retrofitting their homes - both in operating costs and resale value - don't forget the non-economic one, lessening our impact on the planet. ‘Their property is worth less than they think it is’: The country’s 6.27-million houses built pre-2010 have a median thermal rating of 2.8 stars, less than half the energy efficiency rating of the latest building code. Great to chat with Michael Bleby at The Australian Financial Review about CoreLogic and Tom Coad's recent report on the energy efficiency of Australia's built environment. A huge amount of work needed to upgrade homes across Australia. The real estate sector will play a vital role in realising this transformation. #REIA, #REIV, #energyefficiency #propertyvalues

Objective Standards for Housing Projects – The Next Battleground? RJR's Andrew Junius authored this week's e-newsletter. California is shifting the housing landscape with objective design standards, removing local discretion that has long delayed housing projects. Cities like San Francisco and Marin County are leading the way with detailed guidelines for everything from height limits to facade designs. While these efforts aim to streamline housing approvals, the challenge lies in untangling subjective standards woven into local codes. The goal? Prioritize housing production by eliminating subjective "neighborhood character" debates. The focus now shifts to project-by-project implementation—critical for addressing the housing crisis.
