As the United States heads into an election year amid a spate of profound global crises, the political debate will no doubt turn at some point to the Biden Administration’s performance on foreign policy. Although Biden kicked off his re-election campaign with a question: “Is democracy still America’s sacred cause?”, one critical area that will likely remain insufficiently analyzed is his performance on global democracy issues. Pro-democracy resistance forces are gaining momentum in key regions while democratic activists in these difficult environments are often the only hope for preserving civic space and rights. Rampant corruption and political clientelism are undermining trust in democracy and driving the young and educated to emigrates.

🌍 The Intersection of Big Business, Foreign Influence, and Democracy 🗳️ In an era where the lines between commerce and governance are increasingly blurred, we must reflect on the vital role that democracy plays in our societies. The influence of big business and foreign entities on the democratic process poses significant challenges that we cannot afford to overlook. As we witness unprecedented levels of political funding and lobbying, it is crucial to ask ourselves: How much power should corporations wield in shaping our policies? The decisions made in boardrooms can have far-reaching implications on public welfare, often prioritizing profit over the common good. Moreover, the specter of foreign interference looms large, threatening the integrity of our elections and the very foundations of democratic governance. We must remain vigilant against tactics that seek to manipulate public opinion and undermine our electoral processes. Democracy is not just a system of government; it is a reflection of our collective values, aspirations, and rights. It allows us to voice our opinions, demand accountability, and ensure that our leaders represent our interests. As engaged citizens, we must advocate for transparency, uphold the principles of fair representation, and protect our democratic institutions from undue influence. Together, we can foster a political landscape where every voice matters and where democracy thrives. Let’s commit to safeguarding our democratic process — not just for ourselves, but for future generations. 🗳️✨ #Democracy #PoliticalIntegrity #BigBusiness #ForeignInterference #CivicEngagement #Transparency #Accountability

Fiction, Fantasy and the 3 Ss! I spoke to Bloomberg News in the US shortly before last night’s Presidential debate, highlighting the importance— for both candidates- of simply remaining standing, being sentient and being mindful of the swipes they’ll take at each other. My prediction that it would be more like a wrestling match than a genteel policy debate turned out to be right. Trump and Biden traded barbs with Biden frequently stuttering and unsure, while Trump served up his customary fare of fiction and fantasy. There was a lot riding on last night’s debate. With so many undecided voters and high global and domestic stakes, this debate was finally the opening salvo in the campaign. We also discussed the upcoming elections in Europe where Immigration has moved to centre stage and we’re seeing a return to European political risk for the first time since 2012. It's super election year. Democracy is globally in decline, just as our capacity to overcome issues like war, climate change, and social division. The far-right has its great comeback also due to the lack of convincing narratives by the mainstream. Having turned my back to the "political world" after many years of engagement, I can sense that there is a great need for radical honesty, imagination, and real conversations. Yet today, if we look at the EU-elections, the elephants in the room are rarely up for debate - our hyprocrisy is blatantly obvious. There is so little coherence when we think about geopolitics, our retreat from the "rules-based international order", or our massive democratic deficits from the rule of law (cf. Orban) to the lacking legitimacy of our Commission President. Against that background, I explore how political communications can help us move beyond a feeling of powerlessness, hopelessness, and limitative understanding of power as throwing a piece of paper into a box every few years. So it appears that almost every Western Democracy is in the process of electing right wing government's, and in several cases very far right governments. But the UK is predicted to elect a centrist left wing socialist government. How can that be? How can the UK be so far out of step with the rest of global politics? What does the UK electorate know that the rest of the world doesn't? Why is the UK zigging when the rest of the world is zagging? Is the UK just far ahead of the rest of global politics, or just far behind, or generally out of step with global political opinion? Socialist left wing ideologies seem so far removed from the reality of what is actually happening in everyone's lives. #eyeseew

"Without such a renewal of political leadership, without bringing politicians closer to the people they serve — through citizens’ assemblies and other forms of deliberative democracy — trust in established politics will only continue to wither. And centrist parties, which wrongly believe a majority of voters have changed their values, risk participating in a race to the bottom, pandering to extreme policies in a misguided attempt to woo them back. This is doomed to fail. Such an approach will only help national populists by leaving their ideas unchallenged. And most importantly, it runs the risk of making mainstream parties a pale imitation of their opponents, distracting from their real mission: Offering ambitious and intelligent policies that will connect with the electorate." https://lnkd.in/dxruWspv

This month's News has been crazy and I have a few things to say about it. It's election year and we have some massive issues that will require some big decisions. This is what I'll cover in the video: • Foreign affairs • American President • Tax dollar allocation • World War 3 potential • Unity as the solution What are your opinions of the current state of the U.S. and how do you think we can solve all these issues? Remember that your vote matters and if we come together to lead the country in a positive direction we can finally see that change we've been hoping for. It just takes some team work. The anti-Zionist movement is so dangerous to the US empire because it exposes the contradictions and artificiality of US politics. Small-government, “America first” conservatives cheer that their tax dollars go to a foreign nation and support the suppression of free speech towards that end. Liberals who supposedly stand with repressed minorities and spent the past few years bleating about “international law” are helping arm a settler-colonial ethnostate as it commits genocide. And after years of shrieking about Russian “election interference," liberals deliberately ignore AIPAC’s proud influence over elections and therefore decisions of politicians. Democrats and Republicans claim to despise one another and seemingly can’t work together. But when it comes to maintaining a settler-colonial ethnostate and suppressing all domestic dissent, Democrats and Republicans work together wonderfully.
