When your baby spends time in a #nicu/#neonatal unit, it will affect their mental health and future outcomes. That’s what parents are frequently reminded of. When we are repeatedly told this, we are frightened. We are frightened of not only the here and now, but the future too. During #infantmentalhealthweek, I wanted to shine the light on #neonatal families and the burden we feel, considering the impact of our babies being born #preterm or sick, and hearing this. How about we stop thinking of the potential detriment, and think instead of all the protective steps we take as parents, to support our children’s emotional well-being. Often at moments, when our own mental health was significantly impacted. Let’s remember this week. ⭐️Let’s remember the whispers those babies heard when they received their care. ⭐️Let’s remember how many times they were told they were loved during their hospital stay . ⭐️Let’s remember how they were told their parents couldn’t wait to take them home. ⭐️Let’s remember the times they heard their parents and nurses laugh. ⭐️Let’s remember the songs they used to have played to them. ⭐️Let’s remember how their #nicu experience does not define them and their future is unknown. July 19-25 is Black Maternal Mental Health Week, and PeriPAN is looking forward to presenting at Shades of Blue Project's Black Maternal Mental Health Week Summit in Houston. According to an NIH analysis, 29–44% of Black women in the United States experience postpartum depressive symptoms (PDS), yet few are properly identified and/or connected to mental care services. Engaging in collaborative care, such as with PeriPAN, is essential for increasing access and allowing moms to receive care where they feel most comfortable. This month is dedicated to raising awareness about the unique mental health challenges faced by minority communities and promoting equitable mental health care for all. Minority communities often face distinct mental health challenges due to systemic inequalities, cultural stigmas, and lack of access to quality care. By promoting awareness and inclusivity, we can help create a healthier, more supportive environment for all.

The 10th of October marks World Mental Health Day. It is recognised globally as a day to raise awareness of mental health issues, the importance of mental health education, and the advocacy against social stigma. Significant stigma surrounding mental health for women from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds remains very prominent.
