Today, I had the opportunity to donate blood at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore for a friend's mother, who is about to undergo heart surgery. This experience reminded me of a few important lessons: 1. Small actions can have a big impact. Something as simple as donating blood can help save a life. 2. Health is a shared responsibility. Mateusz, the son of one of our colleagues from Ailleron (Piotr Warchoł) is fighting a critical battle with a heart defect. The only chance to save his heart is surgery at Boston Children's Hospital, but the costs are overwhelming – 400,000 USD.      In Poland, doctors only offer palliative treatment, which is intended to "improve the patient's quality of life," but it doesn’t fix the defects. This treatment leads to the development of a single-ventricular heart, which has many long-term complications, including reduced efficiency of the body and liver cirrhosis. Moreover, no one can predict how long a child with this condition will be able to live. Day 6 of Donate Life Month's Spirit Week is an uplifting way to promote organ, eye, and tissue donation. That's because today is Create "Donate Life" Rocks day. Painted rocks have become a trend in communities all over the United States. The mission is simple: you paint a rock and place it somewhere for someone to find. Once found, someone picks up the painted rock and eventually places it in a new location. Painted rocks get traded out for other rocks with other messages. Some rocks say Kindness Matters. Some just have a simple design meant to brighten someone's day. A Donate Life rock, however, helps promote the ongoing need for organ, eye, and tissue donors to help give people the gift of life or sight. It symbolizes a message of hope for someone waiting for a life-saving or life-changing surgery. AS A TWO-TIME KIDNEY TRANSPLANT RECIPIENT VIA DECEASED DONORS, I TRULY ADMIRE THOSE WHO LITERALLY GIVE OF THEMSELVES TO HELP ANOTHER PERSON TO SUSTAIN LIFE. Anyone can sign up to be a donor. Medical tests can help determine which recipient would benefit from your donation. Oftentimes, people misunderstand who qualifies to become an organ donor. An organ donor can be: Anyone between the ages of 18 - 60 years of age at most transplant centers. A parent, sibling or adult child. Other relatives, such as an uncle, aunt, or cousin. A biologically unrelated person who knows the recipient, such as a friend, co-worker, significant other, or spouse of a friend. Anyone who knows the recipient's need for the organ.
