The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has updated its rapid risk assessment for public health professionals on #mpox. The mpox situation has evolved since the last assessment was completed on April 16, 2024: - reporting of clade Ia mpox cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has increased; - outbreaks of the new subclade, clade Ib, have expanded to countries neighbouring the DRC; -the first clade Ib mpox cases have been reported outside Africa. In response to these developments, the new rapid risk assessment looks at the likelihood of clade Ia or Ib mpox importation into Canada and the impact of onward spread in the next three months (September to November). As a public health professional, I strongly believe Nepal needs a centralized repository for public health data with open access practices. Why? Data is Key 🗝️ Effective disease prevention, control, and resource allocation rely heavily on data. And we have a problem 🚨 Finding relevant data requires going through numerous websites and contacting different entities making it a time-consuming and inefficient process. Also, data collection methods vary across agencies, leading to inconsistencies and hindering efforts to analyze trends across the country. And the underreporting of cases, particularly in remote areas, can create an inaccurate picture of public health issues. A central repository would be a game-changer. Here's how: • Standardized data: Collecting data from various sources in a standardized format would ensure consistency and facilitate analysis. • Improved accessibility: Clear access protocols would make data readily available to researchers, policymakers, and the public. Promoting open data practices, where public health data is freely available online, would foster: • Transparency: Increased trust in public health efforts. • Empowerment: Public health professionals and researchers could conduct independent analysis, leading to a more comprehensive understanding of health trends in Nepal. In #Pakistan, COVID-19 exacerbated provincial health systems’ challenges related to #FamilyPlanning (FP) and maternal health as public services shifted to support pandemic response efforts. The USAID-funded Pakistan Building Healthy Families Activity, implemented by Pathfinder International and Chemonics, is working to increase the capacity of national and provincial governments to increase the uptake and the quality of #FP and #MNCH services and products, as well as encourage widespread behavior change, therefore building resilience against future health shocks. 'My Health, My Right’, the theme for World Health Day this year, was chosen to champion everyone's right to quality health services. Our experts are passionate in their determination to make this right a reality in the harshest contexts. We believe that access to quality health services is a non-negotiable human right, no matter where you are. An excellent example of this is the comprehensive assessment our experts, Elisabeth Kleipool, Myrte Wassenaar, John Ifejube, Nima Yaghmaei, Sandra Alba, Nadine Naumann, Rifat Rahman, and Marjolein Dieleman, conducted for the World Health Organization (WHO) in #Afghanistan last year. They mapped all health workers across the country to assess the supply and need for different types of health workers. Despite the ongoing challenges in Afghanistan, our experts, the WHO, and local stakeholders were able to provide insights to drive decision-making in the hopes of achieving universal health coverage.     “The results highlight the shortages of health workers in Afghanistan and the need to allow female enrollment in medical training programmes and universities. Female health workers are the core of primary health services and support better access to health services for women and children,” emphasises Marjolein.
