In times of sickness, nurses often serve as the unsung heroes, providing not only medical care but also emotional support to both patients and their families. Taryn's experience in the hospital highlighted the profound impact nurses can have beyond the confines of medical treatment. 🫶🏼 These two nurses became Taryn's lifelines during her hospital stays, embodying compassion, empathy, and professionalism. Beyond administering medications and monitoring vital signs, they took the time to truly listen, to understand Taryn's fears and concerns, and to offer comfort and reassurance. 🫶🏼 But their support extended beyond Taryn herself. They recognized the toll her crisis was taking on me, and they went above and beyond to ensure I was also cared for. Whether it was providing updates, answering questions, or simply offering me a listening ear, these nurses recognized that healing extends beyond the patient to encompass the entire support network. 🫶🏼 In essence, these two nurses became Taryn's people when I wasn't there – a source of strength, comfort, and understanding during a challenging time. Their dedication and compassion serve as a reminder of the vital role nursing staff play in not only treating illnesses but also in fostering healing and well-being for both patients and their families. 💔 Moral Injury in Nursing: An Unseen Crisis 💔 Nurses are the unsung heroes of healthcare, but the emotional toll they face is often overlooked. Moral injury—when caregivers are forced to act against their ethical beliefs due to systemic pressures—has become a silent epidemic in the nursing profession. As a 26-year veteran of the nursing profession, I can tell you countless stories, I don't allow this to happen to me, I stand up for myself as well as my co-workers. ⚠️ What is Moral Injury? Definition: The profound psychological distress that results from actions, or the lack of them, which violate one's moral or ethical code. Causes: Situations like understaffing, lack of resources, and policies that prioritize efficiency over patient care. 🔍 Why It Matters: Mental Health: Leads to anxiety, depression, and burnout. Quality of Care: Impacts the ability to provide compassionate, patient-centered care. Retention: Contributes to the high turnover rate in the nursing profession. 👩⚕️👨⚕️ Supporting Our Nurses: Awareness: Acknowledge the existence and impact of moral injury. Resources: Provide mental health support and counseling. Change: Advocate for systemic changes that align healthcare practices with ethical care. Let's stand with our nurses and work towards a healthcare system that supports their well-being and moral integrity. 💪❤️ #MoralInjury #NursingCrisis #SupportOurNurses #HealthcareHeroes Share your experiences and thoughts below. Maggie is dedicated to being a tireless champion for nurses. She strives to protect nurses' rights and elevate the nursing profession as a whole.
As someone who has spent two decades navigating various departments within healthcare, I can attest firsthand to the pervasive nature of incivility in our profession and the statement that resonated with me" It's not a matter of if nurses will encounter incivility, but when." That's why it's imperative that we address this issue head-on, starting from #nursingschool. #Nurses need to be equipped with the skills to handle #workplaceincivility as part of their foundational #nursingeducation. Incidents of #verbalabuse, #bullying, and #harassment are violations of the standards upheld by ALL professions. They not only erode workplace morale but also compromise #patientsafety and #healthcarestaff well-being. It's essential to remind all #healthcareprofessionals that such behaviors are not only unethical but also violate rules and regulations governing their professional licensure. Unprofessional conduct is grounds for disciplinary action, including the potential revocation of a professional license. It is the DUTY of all healthcare organizations to take decisive action against incivility, and if they fail to do so, #nurses and all #healthcareprofessionals have the right and responsibility to report it to the appropriate regulatory bodies. By educating #nurses about their rights and responsibilities in confronting incivility, we empower them to advocate for a culture of respect and professionalism. Together, let's ensure that every nurse has the knowledge and support needed to address incivility effectively and create a safer, more supportive work environment for all. #NurseEmpowerment #Incivility #Professionalism #PatientSafety #HealthcareEthics

Nurses are an essential part of our healthcare system, yet they face alarming rates of violence and burnout. Did you know that 2 nurses are assaulted every hour and 30% plan on leaving their job in the next 30 days? Violence against nurses has increased 5% over the last year, and ER nurses face a physically or verbally abusive situations for every 40 hours worked. Unfortunately, nurses do not feel supported in advocating for themselves by reporting these situations. It's time for institutions to take accountability for providing a safe working environment and supporting nurses' physical and psychological safety. Addressing overall working conditions for nurses would be a great step in the right direction. The answer isn't an ongoing stream of new nurses to burnout and move on to the next one. Let's work together to create a safer and healthier work environment for our nurses so they can continue to provide the crucial care our communities need. #nurses #healthcare #safety #support
It's bad enough that nurses are getting assaulted. Some nurses feel as if they are being blamed for being attacked, nursing leaders say. It's adding to the mental stress of nurses, and researchers say some nurses don't report violent incidents because they're worried they are going to be blamed. Check out my story for Chief Healthcare Executive.

Human connection 👫 is more crucial than ever, specifically in the nursing profession 👩⚕️ . While many often focus on the complex science of nursing 🔬 , it is the art of nursing that is its true essence . This is defined as the nurse's ability to be compassionate, caring, and communicative, which enables nurses to connect with their patients. Nursing is a profession based on caring, and it has been ranked as the most trusted profession in America for 22 consecutive years. This would not have been possible without building community, holistic caring, and making human connections. As a nurse leader, I have faced challenges in helping my nurses learn how to make those connections and avoid solely task-based interactions with their patients. 📕 Enter David Brooks and his New York Times Bestseller “How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen”. Here are a few things I learned from Brooks that I share with my staff: 1. “People who are permanently damaged by trauma seek to assimilate what happened into their existing models and people who grow try to accommodate what happened in order to create new models”. We can grow from the trauma we have experienced with a growth mindset. I am committed to helping facilitate that. 💪 2. To know someone who is suffering, you must know how they are processing the experience and know how to accompany them in that process. Accompaniment is an other-centered experience where we can “be attentive, sensitive, and unhurried. You are not leading or directing the other person but are there as a faithful presence, open to whatever may come.” 🧘♂️ 3. Curiosity makes us empathetic and open to seeing a person. It allows us to practice illumination where we are telling our patients that we trust them before they trust us. As Brooks says, “Respect is a gift that you offer with your eyes.” With every interaction we are conveying a message with the energy we emit, the way we look or don’t look at a person, and by what we say and don’t say. 🎁 Thank you 🙏 David Brooks for this tool that will forever be at the heart of how I choose to make connections with others! 💜 #davidbrooks #howtoknowaperson #humanconnection #patientexperience #randomhouse #curiosity

As we celebrate Nurses Week, we are reminded of the demanding nature of nursing. More than 70% of nurses end up experiencing musculoskeletal disorders like back pain or carpel tunnel syndrome. Here are some tips to reduce the risk of developing such health issues: 1. Practice proper body mechanics when lifting patients. 2. Utilize assistive equipment whenever possible. 3. Prioritize good posture to minimize stress. #NursesMaketheDifference #NursesAreEssential #ThankYouNurses
