POV: Everyone keeps telling you it’s nurse burnout when it’s really nurse-specific traumatization🤯 Drop “ASSESSMENT” to uncover the truth of your symptoms! If you’re a nurse, the chances that you’ve felt detached, utterly exhausted, or beyond overwhelmed is high. The truth is, it’s most likely not because you’re just burnt out like you keep hearing🤡 We tell people experiencing burnout to “build more resilience” & “practice more self-care”. These statements & suggestions are more dismissive than they are effective. Trauma symptoms frequently hide under the guise of burnout. And 83% of our nurses report suffering from these symptoms (and more). What’s occurring below the surface is NOT burnout, it’s nurse-specific traumatization🚨 And I’m here to help! Drop “ASSESSMENT” in the comments & I’ll send you a link to a quick self-assessment to uncover the truth of your symptoms. It’s time to reveal what’s really occurring as a result of healthcare system inadequacies.

As April draws to a close, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the conclusion of Stress Awareness Month, a time intended to raise public awareness about the causes and cures for stress. A recent study published in JAMA Network Open found that among the nearly 7,900 nurses in Illinois and New York who left the healthcare field from 2018 to 2021, 26% cited burnout and emotional exhaustion, and 21% cited insufficient staffing. Even more startling, 43% and 40% of nurses younger than 30 years old cited those reasons – true evidence of the persisting problem. As the nursing industry faces a growing shortage, it’s imperative that we invest in their physical and mental wellbeing to create a healthier and more resilient nursing workforce capable of delivering high-quality care. While tomorrow is the beginning of a new month, I believe our collective efforts are not going unnoticed. We must continue to come together to work towards a solution, not just during Stress Awareness Month, but every day of the year. For more resources on how to cope with stress: https://bit.ly/3y5e8l8

Healthcare workers, especially nurses, often experience traumatic events and stress related to patient care, including dealing with deaths on the ward. This can lead to: 1. Compassion fatigue: Emotional exhaustion and reduced ability to empathize. 2. Secondary traumatic stress: Symptoms similar to PTSD, such as flashbacks and anxiety. 3. Burnout: Physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion. 4. Moral distress: Feeling powerless to prevent patient suffering or death.etc. I'm afraid issues like these are just ignored, but they carry so much weight on the mental health of the staffs. turning from a nurse into some kind of a robot without emotions. for a long time we have made it look so normal which is not... these issues have actually gone as far as altering the normal lives of these individuals and some find comfort in very unhealthy vice's.. By acknowledging and addressing these challenges, healthcare workers can find healthy ways to cope with the emotional demands of their job and continue providing compassionate care. #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthadvocate

Share a helper tip for easing patient anxiety. ✏️ Here are some tips for easing patient anxiety: ✍🏾Establish Trust: Build rapport with patients by introducing yourself, actively listening to their concerns, and addressing any questions they may have. Establishing trust is essential for creating a supportive environment. ✍🏾Provide Information: Educate patients about their condition, treatment options, and what to expect during procedures or appointments. Clear communication can help alleviate anxiety by reducing uncertainty. Encourage Expression: Encourage patients to express their fears and concerns openly. Validate their feelings and reassure them that it's normal to feel anxious. Active listening and empathy can go a long way in making patients feel understood and supported. ✍🏾Create a Calm Environment: Ensure that the physical environment is conducive to relaxation. Minimize noise, maintain privacy, and provide comfortable seating. Consider incorporating elements such as soothing music or aromatherapy to promote relaxation. ✍🏾Offer Distraction Techniques: Provide distractions such as reading materials, puzzles, or calming imagery to help patients focus their attention away from anxiety-provoking thoughts. ✍🏾Practice Relaxation Techniques: Teach patients simple relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, or guided imagery. These techniques can help patients manage their anxiety in the moment. ✍🏾Involve Loved Ones: Encourage patients to have a trusted friend or family member accompany them to appointments or procedures for emotional support. Having a familiar face present can provide comfort and reassurance. ✍🏾Empower Patients: Empower patients by involving them in decision-making processes regarding their care whenever possible. Feeling empowered and in control can help reduce feelings of helplessness and anxiety. ✍🏾Follow Up: Follow up with patients after appointments or procedures to address any lingering concerns or questions they may have. Knowing that their healthcare provider cares about their well-being can help alleviate anxiety and build trust. Seek Professional Help: For patients experiencing severe or persistent anxiety, consider referring them to a mental health professional for additional support and intervention. ✍🏾By implementing these strategies, healthcare providers can help create a supportive and comforting environment that eases patient anxiety and enhances the overall healthcare experience. 🌟 Everything You Need To Know About Strengthening Empathy as a Registered Nurse in the ICU 🌟 Early in my career, I realized empathy was more than just feeling for my patients. It involved truly understanding and connecting with patients and their families. I remember one of my first experiences where a patient's family was distraught. Instead of just offering comfort, I listened to their concerns and fears, providing the emotional support they needed. This connection not only helped the family but also allowed me to deliver better care. 💖 Empathy requires continuous self-reflection and a willingness to understand others’ perspectives. Balancing this ensures you can maintain your well-being while providing the best care possible. 🩺 Effects of Overextension of Empathy: 🪞 Emotional Exhaustion: Constantly absorbing others' emotions without processing your own can lead to feeling drained. 🪞 Burnout: Excessive empathy without self-care can lead to burnout, impacting work and home life. 🪞 Compassion Fatigue: Exposing yourself to others' traumas without boundaries can result in compassion fatigue. 🪞 Decreased Quality of Care: When overwhelmed, your ability to provide compassionate care diminishes, affecting patient outcomes. Be sure to: ✅ Set Emotional Boundaries: It's crucial to be empathetic, but setting boundaries is essential to avoid emotional burnout. Protect your mental health. ✅ Reflect Regularly: Take time to reflect on your experiences and emotional responses. ✅ Practice Self-Care: Prioritize activities that rejuvenate you! Regular self-care ensures you have the resilience needed to provide compassionate care. Strengthening my empathy as a registered nurse in the ICU has enhanced my patient care and enriched my professional and personal growth. 👑 Implement these strategies to build stronger connections and make a meaningful impact on the lives of those you care for while maintaining your own well-being. 🙌 👉 Follow us now for more tips and strategies! 🌸 #empathy #nursingskills #dailydose #ICUnurse #healthcare #emotionalwellbeing
