BSc Biomedical Sciences VS BSc Healthcare Sciences As an A-level student expecting results in the coming month. Have you considered the type of degree? Does it have a 12-month placement year, to ensure that you obtain your HCPC registration at the end? If not then beware as you may suffer years of unemployment if you decide to want to work in the NHS. Many have not heard about BSc Healthcare Sciences, been in existence since the early 2000s. Consider BSc Healthcare Sciences - Life Sciences (PTP) with this degree you have the placement year included and graduate with your HCPC Reg. I have informed so many, but many are pushed into this field without knowing the outcome in years to come. Please tell friends and family as it is very disheartening when graduates end up unemployed because they have to pay off their student loans. For more info DM me... Healthcare Sciences (Life Sciences), Applied Biomedical Science and Biomedical Science (with a sandwich placement in a clinical laboratory) BSc programmes have completion of the #IBMS registration training portfolio built in. This means graduates can register with the #HCPC as a #biomedicalscientist straight away. There are only 4 #IBMSAccredited HCS (Life Sciences) BSc programmes in the UK but more than 60 BSc Biomedical Science programmes. This issue is multifactual in its origin. The biggest issue we have is that pathology services aren't patient facing and so is often forgotten about or an after thought, both on a Government scale as seen in the NHS Long Term Plan (a national plan for the coming years of improvement to NHS services which did not address pathology services at all) and local scale (university student placement availability at suitable sites, funding/ investment, laboratory training opportunities, laboratory progression, etc.). We need multiple avenues into the laboratory rather than one route, universities are making efforts to allow this (with the apprenticeship schemes - but these need funding and support from the various trusts). Greater awareness of the correct courses to attend - the IBMS do their part here but unless you know of them you are behind (for instance many go to university and study Biochemistry or Microbiology but this won't give them access to NHS laboratories). Unless real change occurs (such as investment, increased student placement opportunities, staff engagement to help support training, teaching interview techniques, amongst many other issues) on a national and local scale, we will stagnate.

It is indeed troubling to observe that many undergraduates remain uninformed or misled regarding the HCPC certification status of their courses. This oversight, whether on the part of universities or the HCPC, necessitates urgent reform. HCPC must implement stricter guidelines and regular audits to verify that educational institutions comply with the necessary standards and accurately inform prospective students. The financial and emotional toll on students who, after three years of study and accruing significant debt, discover they must undertake additional courses to achieve certification is substantial. These students are, in essence, paying customers and deserve full disclosure and assurance that their investment will meet professional requirements upon graduation. Systemic changes are imperative to protect students' interests and uphold the integrity of the education and certification processes.. What’s is your assessment David Wells? After all one of your direct line employees had the same problem while you were working at Viapath. Any lessons learned?

This is excellent advice for those about to start university who might be considering Biomedical science. As an undergraduate Biomed student myself, having Dr Lydia as my advisor and mentor through for example my placement interview has helped so much! Through her help I was able to land a placement with William Harvey Hospital which will enable me to complete my HCPC portfolio before I graduate 🙌🏾🥳 I absolutely reccomend having her as your mentor as she really knows the ins and outs of this industry and gives such pinpointed information 🙌🏾👌🏾
