Dr. Mary Tilak & Associates’ Post

Empathy is vital to delivering a patient-centered, value-based care experience. At our Northwest Indiana practice, empathy training is an important part of our continuing medical education program and our orientation process. “Dr. Tilak spends a lot of time molding us and making sure we have the knowledge we need to provide the best care,” says Bethany Michelis, FNP-Certified, a nurse practitioner for Dr. Mary Tilak & Associates. Building empathy into the foundation of a healthcare delivery organization is a critical step toward operationalizing empathy, as this Harvard Medical School article notes. At our practice, we close our office for half a day once a quarter so our entire staff and provider community may take part in continuing medical education and continuous process improvements. Discussions around ways to optimize the patient experience—including by building empathy into care processes—are an integral aspect of training.
