Empathy is vital to delivering a patient-centered, value-based care experience. At our Northwest Indiana practice, empathy training is an important part of our continuing medical education program and our orientation process. “Dr. Tilak spends a lot of time molding us and making sure we have the knowledge we need to provide the best care,” says Bethany Michelis, FNP-Certified, a nurse practitioner for Dr. Mary Tilak & Associates. Building empathy into the foundation of a healthcare delivery organization is a critical step toward operationalizing empathy, as this Harvard Medical School article notes. At our practice, we close our office for half a day once a quarter so our entire staff and provider community may take part in continuing medical education and continuous process improvements. Discussions around ways to optimize the patient experience—including by building empathy into care processes—are an integral aspect of training. For GPS, nurses and allied health clinicians. The ask, share, know model from the university of Sydney, is a useful tool providing three simple questions around accessing healthcare providers. It is so important we engage in shared decision making in early stages of care- 1. What are my options? 2. What are the possible benefits or harm of these options? 3. How likely are each of these harms and benefits and harms happen to me? The ask me 3 program reminds us of how to slow down and be a good communicator with participants and their families: 1. What is my main problem? 2. What do I need to do? 3. Why is it important for me to do this? Slow down: Speaking slowly and allowing people to hear and understand information is important

Genuine engagements with people working in healthcare are not easy. The reality is that trust and respect are earned. How can you gain respect in healthcare? 💬 Through real engagements with nurses, physicians, and other health professionals, without hidden agendas. These actions are powerful, as they will be valued and appreciated. ✉ Writing sincere and specific thank-you notes. These will be cherished by the recipients, as they have become increasingly rare in healthcare. 👩⚕️👨⚕️ If you make a real and consistent effort to learn people's actual names, engage with them by smiling, and genuinely care to listen, you might be surprised by the impactful positive responses you receive. 🤝 Do the work and be kind to everyone, regardless of their position and title. By doing so, you will earn respect and, most importantly, make healthcare a better place to work for all of us.
