PODIATRISTS. YES, YOU CAN BREAK THE MOLD! You can be yourself. You can be free and autonomous in practice. There is no doubt that every single doctor who accepts insurance also accepts exploitation and abuse. Even indirectly, if you are an employed doctor, you still suffer from the insurance-dependency model as your employer will pass the abuse down to you. It's time to hold your head up high. Working as an independent Podiatrist has turned out to be the most exciting challenge post graduation, I had to discuss interesting cases with other healthcare professionals who were trained differently from me, remember they had the upper hand on experience as myself, I had to dig deeper into research in order for me to share ideas with confidence and understanding while giving evidence why they could work for such patients. Have you ever challenged a surgeon on their decision for wanting to amputate certain diabetic patients and then patients later heal after following a treatment plan drawn and proposed by you as a Podiatrist? I don't even have 12 months of experience but I have realised that independence can stretch you to your better version particularly when you have a chance to participate in teams which seek best medical outcomes for patients. #Independence #teamwork #Podiatrymonth

A bittersweet memory! It's rare but it happens - putting your heart and soul into a case, only to not receive the gratitude you expected in return. Recently, I had an experience with a 40-year-old Emarati patient, Mr. X, who came to our clinic in severe pain after starting an RCT elsewhere. Despite my initial reluctance to take on an unfinished root canal treatment, I had to step in to help. Since he was a VIP I had to be extremely cautious. The case presented a challenge, with ledges in all three canals of the upper left 7 tooth. The first session was intense, as I worked tirelessly to bypass the ledges for an hour. Unfortunately, I faced a setback when I broke a file during the procedure. Despite the complications, I was able to complete the RCT and final composite filling successfully in the second sitting. To my surprise, Mr. X seemed unappreciative of the time and effort I had put in. His attitude towards me remained indifferent, even though he experienced no pain after the treatment. Weeks later, Mr. X returned to his previous dentist, who happened to be Arab like him, with mild pain on the same tooth. The dentist performed an occlusal reduction for the tooth, despite there being no high points on the POR and no opposing tooth. The patient credited the entire pain relief to this doctor. This experience left me feeling disheartened, as I realized that sometimes, racism can overshadow the hard work and dedication we put into our profession. On a positive note, I pushed my limits and did something that I previously thought was beyond my expertise. It's always important to challenge ourselves and continue to grow in our profession. 💪 Disclaimer: This encounter is not a reflection of all Emarati patients, as I have had the pleasure of treating many wonderful individuals from the same background. Podiatrists, sitting on a difficult situation keeps you sitting on a difficult situation. When things are not what you expected them to be and they keep getting worse, you need to have a plan of action. Making excuses keeps you stuck. Thinking about it is important.
