We love to talk of Diversity and inclusion, equality, and having people-friendly policies, but some miss it out consciously. I had gone to see a play. The theater of course has its policy of snacks, WATER, & cold drinks not allowed in the auditorium. I understand not allowing snacks or cold drinks - but water is an absolute need. The play had no interval. For a 1 hour 50 minutes of the play, one has to go without water. Some senior citizens and people may need to constantly sip water. Where are we as a nation going with this? Theater owners/ cinema houses must take into account this aspect. Drinking water is a need and not a luxury.

Too often, organisations and group members have no clue of its remit or have lost sense of what the group is supposed to be doing. This can lead to frustration and resentment if, for example, the group is trying to advise and deliver, but the organisation believes it is an affinity group. Equally, if an affinity group is being asked to advise on policy, members can begin to feel exploited. Establishing the purpose, remit and boundaries of the group is therefore essential. This can be realised easily with terms of reference which should be explicit about: -The length of service - What the group advises on and what it doesn’t - Whether it is expected to deliver any aspects of work - Which policies, action plans and strategies guide it - What it doesn’t do Ideally, in the spirit of inclusion, the terms of reference would be created collaboratively, guided by the organisation but informed significantly by the membership of the group. Filling up libraries with a wide array of writers from different backgrounds and covering a variety of topics goes beyond just showcasing diversity on the surface. It's about fostering a genuine intention to embrace inclusivity and provide opportunities for all voices to be heard. Merely displaying pride flags and handing out lanyards can signify a commitment to diversity, but true progress lies in the actions taken to support individuals in reaching their fullest potential. This entails implementing concrete measures and policies that create a level playing field for everyone, regardless of their background or identity. By going beyond symbolic gestures and actively working towards creating a more inclusive environment, organizations can ensure that diversity is not just a buzzword but a lived reality for all individuals involved. It's about fostering a culture where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives and talents to the collective success of the community. https://buff.ly/3GiVoiD #equitydiversityinclusion #arts #artsandculture #leadership #inclusionleadership #inclusionmatters #theatre #dance #music #diversity #hr #training #education #onlinetraining #learning #inclusion #equity #development

World Braille Day is a special day dedicated to honoring the birth of Louis Braille, the inventor of Braille. This innovative system of raised dots has had a profound impact on the lives of millions of individuals worldwide who are blind or visually impaired. This day also reminds us that individuals with visual impairments deserve equal rights and access to opportunities. This is a great article by RNIB that focusses on how braille makes a difference and how it can be used in the workplace https://buff.ly/471E8K8 Things for you to consider: * To extent do your ways of working support people who are blind or visually impaired? * How safe and accessible are our buildings and working spaces? * How might we reflect on our job roles, to ensure a person who is blind or visually impaired could work with us? #WorldBrailleDay #EqualRights #equitydiversityinclusion #arts #artsandculture #leadership #inclusionleadership #inclusionmatters #theatre #dance #music #diversity #hr #training #education #onlinetraining #learning #inclusion #equity #development

🇬🇧 & 🇦🇪- On a mission to make entertainment the destination. Pop Up Global are dedicated to delivering exceptional entertainment worldwide.
Why is representation in theatre so important? Representation on stage is crucial for several reasons, as it plays a significant role in reflecting and shaping societal norms, fostering inclusivity, and promoting diversity. It is something we are definitely seeing more of within the entertainment industry however there is still more work to be done. Here are some key reasons why representation on stage is so important: > When the stage accurately represents the diversity of society, it allows audiences to see themselves and their stories reflected, fostering a sense of validation and belonging. > Inclusive representation ensures that individuals from various backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, and abilities are included and celebrated, helping to create a more welcoming and accessible environment for all. > Representation on stage provides a platform for underrepresented voices and stories to be heard. > Seeing individuals from underrepresented groups excel on stage can inspire others to pursue their passions and dreams, including nurturing the next generation of performers. Representation can serve as a powerful motivator and catalyst for positive change in society, And although in recent years we have seen huge changes in casting approaches across the industry there is still more we can do to bring true representation to the stage.

This is an opportunity to learn about, explore and better understand what microaggressions are and how they can show up for people. Join us on 26th June from 10.30am - 1pm where we will cover: - What microaggressions are and how they are constructed - Confronting stereotypes and prejudice which lead to microaggressions - Practical exploration of examples of microaggressions - Gaslighting and how to avoid gaslighting people who raise concerns - Q&A "Spotlight Inclusion hosted a brilliant workshop and in-depth training session around microaggressions. It helped our organisation review the current processes and begin to talk about uncomfortable truths to journey forward in our collective understanding. It created a positive shift in staffs outlook when approaching situations both as a receiver or observer of an aggression. The value it brought to me was being able to reference elements learnt from the training to empower me to navigate my ownership over my protected characteristic. I am extremely grateful for the support and time Spotlight Inclusion provided, both professionally and personally - huge thank you." 📣 We should aim to do the right thing always, not only when it makes us look good. A number of high profile UK creatives, from Sting to Stephen Fry, wrote a letter to the men-only Garrick Club ahead of its Tuesday vote to permit women to join for the first time since 1831. As they put it, "we write as Garrick members who produce/co-produce and manage over 35 current productions in the West End and regionally. The current very public controversy over this issue has put us all in an untenable position. Our relations with female artists, co-producers, authors, cast members, members of our creative teams, backstage and front of house theatre staff have all been jeopardised by the recent publicity to the point that, without serious progress being made to finally address this anomaly, we won’t feel able to continue as Garrick members". Setting aside the question of why such exclusive bastions of elite privilege exist in the year 2024, the gentlemen's letter implies that this exclusion is somehow wrong because the world is now watching, thus making these individuals' existing association look bad, and not because the club was always problematic in the first place. One should not only care about equity when called out by others; being humans of principle means we care about it always, including most notably when it is requires standing up to friends. This is especially the case when you are already privileged AND doubly so when it pertains to something you *chose* to associate with. This is not their place of employment, which may have made them fearful about speaking up against its principles lest they compromise their livelihoods. I fully understand the difficulty of such situations and how much harder it is to do the right thing then. But these men had a choice whether or not to align themselves with the Club's values - which have been starkly obvious for centuries now - and they still made it. Writing about it now in this way is disingenuous in the extreme. Beware of 'allies' who cannot even stand with you when the choice is easy. #leadership #ethics #equity #inclusion #womeninbusiness #gender #garrickclub #exclusion #ally #allies #women #dei

How are you using your Board to support and deliver your equity, diversity and inclusion strategy? We could talk about Boards and how they work for days, but a general rule is that every Board member should be engaged, supporting, and using their skills to enhance your organisation. If they aren't doing this, the effectiveness of your Board could be improved. At the same time, they should be maintaining boundaries and sticking to their remit. How we work with and engage Boards is equally as important when it comes to EDI. Your Board should see your EDI strategy as important as any other part of your business. - Does your Board understand why an EDI strategy is important for your organisation? - Have you linked your strategy to your business plan? - Have you trained your board in EDI topics, so they are working in an inclusive way and modelling the behaviour you want from the rest of the organisation? In short, your Board should be a central part of your EDI work. If you need support in how to engage your Board with your EDI work, contact us today https://buff.ly/4bST7tk #equitydiversityinclusion #arts #artsandculture #leadership #inclusionleadership #inclusionmatters #theatre #dance #music #diversity #hr #training #education #onlinetraining #learning #inclusion #equity #development

Inclusion in Theatre for Young Audiences The world has been leaning towards Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility. These concepts are particularly essential in the Performing Arts since the industry shapes our cultural identity and exposes audiences to new ways of better understanding the world they live in. The representation of neurodiverse, deaf and variant identities in performing arts for young audiences is important and urgent. Inclusion inspires underrepresented youth to be fearless and be themselves. Children and young people can be profoundly affected by what they see in plays: for better or worse, one production can plant powerful ideas in their minds. This is particularly important when the mental health of children and teens is constantly under attack. Assitej SA has been pioneering ideas for enabling young people to be active agents in the creation of theatre work, and is dedicated to making and creating inclusive and diverse models of theatre making. Models that are responsive to the needs of ALL children and youth and ensure access to theatre all the while nurturing the lives of our most valued citizens. To achieve true diversity and inclusion, moving beyond just collecting data and ticking boxes is essential. We need to focus on the experiences of marginalized youth and ensure that their perspectives are considered. This means creating a culture that values diverse perspectives and encourages dialogue and understanding. What are your views when it comes to inclusion in theatre for young audiences ? #Theatre4youth #Inclusion #diversity #equity #Access
