Today, we're thrilled to announce the official opening of the Euston Skills Centre, a collaboration between Dragados UK & Ireland, Mace JV (MDJV) and HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd that will provide essential skills training to local communities near the HS2 Euston station site. The event was attended by HS2 and Rail Minister, Huw Merriman MP, who said, “The benefits of HS2 go far beyond the 140 miles of improved connectivity it’s set to deliver when complete; it has also supported tens of thousands of jobs and over 1,300 apprenticeships, providing an incredible opportunity for young people starting their careers. This new centre will play a vital role in skilling up the next generation, encouraging more people to consider a career in infrastructure and helping deliver the country’s biggest rail project.” Euston Skills Centre is situated at the former Maria Fidelis School site, where students will benefit from hands-on learning opportunities. This initiative underscores the MDJV's commitment to nurturing talent and supporting career pathways in the construction industry. HS2’s Euston Area Client Director, Andy Swift, said, "The Mace Dragados team have done an excellent job in delivering this facility in Camden, and I look forward to working with Camden Council to ensure its success.” Dragados, Mace, and HS2's dedication to community engagement and workforce development at Camden remains steadfast. We're proud to be part of this transformative endeavour and look forward to making a positive impact in the communities we serve. It’s #ConstructionMonth2024! We want to take a moment to recognize our apprentices, the journeypersons who train them, and the employers who support them. RCABC has been busy working hard to train new roofers and expand the talent pools in our sector. Our communities depend on the hard work of builders and skilled tradespeople, and it’s important to recognize the dedication and teamwork it takes to transfer skills and knowledge from one generation to the next. As governments continue to provide funding to ease the financial barriers employers face to hire and train first-year apprentices, there may never be a better time to take on an apprentice to help grow your business. We’re pleased to partner with the British Columbia Construction Association (BCCA) for Construction Month, as we highlight RCABC’s commitment to building BC’s skilled workforce. Education Consultant and Senior SDN Associate - supporting providers to ensure maths and English is at the centre of their provision
It is clear from discussions with a number of providers that Ofsted is making relevant changes in an attempt to reduce the stressful impact and disproportionate workload attached to a visit. However, it is hard to see how effectively that can be achieved when the stakes attached to an inspection outcome are so high. Obviously we want appropriate oversight for the industry, but the challenge is to make it authentic and constructive. I spoke to a provider this week who has made significant improvements in a short space of time, but failed to impress Ofsted because sufficient impact has not yet been seen. For me it's all about the direction of travel - if the provision is moving in a positive direction, this needs to be supported and encouraged. Plus of course, in an ideal world, we all exemplify Ofsted values throughout all we do, so an inspection should constitute no threat at all! In the actual world, with constant additional staffing, budgeting and timetabling challenges, there is much to juggle around an inspection. Communication across the sector and sharing of experiences can only help - I have welcomed these discussions across my apprenticeship provider network. #ofsted #inspectionpreparation #sharinggoodpractice

🔥 The Importance of Addressing the Woeful Shortage of Skilled Labor in Britain's Construction Industry 🎤Dr. Turki Faisal Al Rasheed Comment At The Times and The Sunday Time #TheTimes 📍I agree with the William Hague point that the shortage of skilled labor is a significant challenge that needs to be tackled. Building a sufficient number of homes requires a skilled workforce, and without it, the targets set by both parties will be difficult to achieve. To tackle this, both parties should invest in vocational training and apprenticeships, create a positive perception of skilled trades, and collaborate with industry leaders to tailor training programs. Addressing the shortage of skilled labor is crucial for achieving housing targets. https://lnkd.in/dKBQuXQm Britain can’t build without a trades revolution @WilliamJHague

In response to the insightful article by Graham Hasting-Evans at FE Week highlighting the critical challenges and recommendations for the construction industry, the #SkillsPeopleGroup wholeheartedly resonate with the urgency and importance of upskilling the workforce to meet the demands of the evolving landscape, particularly in the pursuit of net-zero goals and compliance with regulatory standards. Here's how we address the four key points raised: T𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲: Through our various sustainable construction training programmes and Skills Bootcamps in Construction, we actively contribute to bridging the skills gap in the industry. By equipping individuals with the necessary competencies, we not only facilitate their entry into the workforce but also support their advancement and promotion within the sector. 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: Through collaborative efforts with government entities and local councils, we have established a pathway to offer fully funded courses to a diverse range of participants, thereby democratising access to education and training opportunities within our community. This strategic partnership not only enhances accessibility but also expands the reach of our programmes to a broader spectrum of individuals and businesses. 𝗘𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: Our commitment to providing learners with the means to obtain CSCS cards, whether green, blue, gold, or black, underscores our dedication to fostering a competent and compliant workforce. We understand the significance of compliance with #BuildingSafetyRegulations and strive to support our learners in meeting these standards. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: Embracing diversity and inclusion is at the core of our ethos. We actively promote participation in our training programmes through initiatives such as #WomenInConstruction events, ensuring that everyone has equal access to opportunities for skill development and career advancement. We are encouraged by the recommendations proposed by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC), and believe that fostering a cohesive and adaptable skills system tailored to the specific requirements of the construction industry is essential for overcoming these hurdles effectively. By reinforcing and refining current training pathways, creating a unified UK skills framework, strengthening the CSCS scheme, and placing a renewed emphasis on diversity initiatives, we can collaboratively tackle the significant challenges confronting our sector. Together, these actions pave the way for a more resilient and dynamic construction industry, poised to thrive in an ever-evolving landscape. #ConstructionSkills #DiversityInConstruction #BuildingFutureTalent With thanks to Kristy H. for the forward! Four recommendations to build construction’s workforce (feweek.co.uk)

The Canadian Apprenticeship Forum (CAF-FCA) estimates that Canada will require more than 122,000 new journeypersons to sustain workforce certification across Red Seal trades from 2022 to 2026. BuildForce Canada / ConstruForce Canada predicts that by 2032, overall hiring requirements in the industry are expected to exceed 299,000 due to the retirement of approximately 245,000 workers (20% of the 2022 labour force) and growth in worker demand of more than 54,000. What does 300,000 people look like? For context and a frame of reference, and because I love rock n' roll, Woodstock '69 had 400k attendees, pictured here. This is an unprecedented demand for workers. #workforcedevelopment #constructioncareers #skilledtrades

NEW NESC REPORT NO.166 "BOOSTING IRELAND'S HOUSING SUPPLY: MODERN METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION" Today NESC Ireland publishes "Boosting Ireland's Housing Supply: Modern Methods of Construction", a new Council Report evaluating the benefits of #MMC in the Irish housing sector - read it for yourself here: https://shorturl.at/DDLBP Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) describes the processes by which building components are manufactured offsite and subsequently transported to be assembled onsite into homes and places to live. This Report identifies MMC as having the potential to increase Ireland’s housing supply while simultaneously helping meet the climate goal of decarbonising our built environment. The Report argues for an increase in targets and funding for new public housing using MMC, under an expanded Social Housing Accelerated Delivery Programme (ADP). Additional funding is also required for dedicated apprenticeship and internship options, in order to facilitate further upskilling for MMC roles.
