Isaac Construction Limited's Matipo Street Rail Crossing Upgrade in Christchurch, completed in May 2022 for KiwiRail, was the Winner of the 2023 CCNZ Hirepool Award in Category 1 -projects up to $2 million. Congratulations Isaacs. 🏆 🏆   The company was commissioned to complete this incredibly tight and technically challenging project costing $1.636 million, in a constrained working environment within a strict 77-hour block of line (BOL) timeframe. It was completed six hours earlier than required (within 71 hours)  led to other tendered works between Isaac and KiwiRail. The Matipo Street Rail Crossing Upgrade involved an old railway crossing that was due for repair, and required modifications to tie in with recent upgrades completed at the Middleton Switch Yard.   Due to the significant impact on the South Island rail network, these works had to be completed within the tight timeframe of 77 hours to mitigate impact to the vital rail network. 🛤 Located in the Addington business district, the rail crossing is also a key thoroughfare for 5000 vehicles every day traffic.   In the lead-up Isaac completed five workshops with five separate delivery teams that were made up of 2.5-hour sessions to brief crews on plans and what needed to be completed in each shift, with risk mitigation and back up plans. Also involved were KiwiRail and track traffic management; and Smith Crane & Construction Ltd and Stand-by Asphalt. Renewal was undertaken in a constrained working environment with multiple crews and an extensive network of underground services on top of a unique rail corridor environment with unfamiliar safety processes, including specific KiwiRail HSE requirements. Training and induction sessions were completed within team workshops and included the development of an Isaac Construction Rail Permit, and the procurement and management of a ‘lock on lock off’ system with the KiwiRail RPO team. Planning with delivery teams involved scaled drawings and model excavators, trucks and cranes to ensure tasks would fit the site. Illustrations were developed within workshops and briefed to the teams prior to the BOL to communicate this. During investigation prior to the BOL, several unchartered KiwiRail services were identified, resulting in consultation with KiwiRail signals team to ensure all parties had a picture of the existing underground network prior to work. The contractor requested that a KiwiRail Signals team member was with each excavation crew to remove redundant services and advise operators of live services. In addition to KiwiRail team protection, section of track were removed to ensure trains could not enter the site. These precautions led to zero service strikes during works' delivery.   The project came in at the same cost as tender and 1776 total hours were worked across the site with zero harm achieved. If Van Elle's quotation had been made part of the contract, I would imagine that Van Elle would have won the case. It is also essential to ensure that the draft contract provided to the parties to agree/sign reflects the same terms and conditions agreed upon. If there is a deviation, it should be resolved, and the draft should be changed accordingly before the contract is executed. This will help to avoid disputes in the event of a problem.

Fast tracking delivery and operational yards. ✅ We were recently contacted by a client to fast track a project on one of their busy yards in Greater Manchester. The scope, within our usual remit 👉 replace all drainage and form new concrete bases. But, as we now often find, the yard cannot be closed down so we must create a phasing plan to keep the yard operational, reducing downtime as much as possible. We have a super efficient approach to phased planning (more on that another day) but what this means is that such approach enables us to react fast to client requests on fast-track yard schemes where yards must not become idle. It's a win-win for both us and our clients. On this particular project in Oldham, Greater Manchester, we were able to survey the yard rapidly and submit a proposal complete with phased plans to the client for sign off within days. We commenced works on site within 1 week and have since completed all drainage and the phase one of concreting. We received the client's request just over 2 weeks ago.
