Two weeks have flown by since the UCISA Leadership Conference in Edinburgh, and the energy from the event is still palpable. I had the privilege of not only attending but also representing Hays alongside Amanda Whicher as a speaker in one of the key sessions of the day. The array of speakers across the day was fantastic - each bringing a unique perspective, enriching our understanding and fuelling our imaginations. A personal highlight of the day? It has to be DreamWorks Animation’s session on ‘The Art of the Possible’. The discussion on data’s role in storytelling was highly thought-provoking, and with an added bonus of a sneak peek of the new Kung Fu Panda! The conference was absolutely buzzing with conversations around scaling digital transformation across Higher Education and it’s clear we’re all on the same page: to shape the future, we must embrace new strategies in hiring and nurturing talent. The shared challenges we face in attracting talent are not just hurdles but opportunities to come together, share our experiences, and forge new paths. The launch of the UCISA Academy is a bold step in that direction, promising to harness the collective wisdom of UCISA, UHR: Universities Human Resources, and Hays to meet the challenges head-on. As I look forward to the follow-up conversations and the budding partnerships, I’m reminded of the power of community. Here's a message about an opportunity from the World Trade Center Institute:  WTCI prides itself in providing exceptional learning and exposure opportunities to college students, which help build their awareness of various industries and functions, help them understand the work, impact and interconnectivity of global business, strengthen their networks and opportunities, and create a community of life-long learners who are equally driven and eager to be the next generation of global leaders in business, technology, government, global NGOs and foreign affairs.   The program this year takes place from August 13-August 22, 2024 (Tuesday-Friday and Monday-Thursday), right before school starts. We have confirmed high-profile visits to McCormick, Collins Aerospace, Pompeian Oil, and Stanley Black and Decker, and professional development sessions on topics such as personal brand building and communication/presentation skills, leadership acumen, and collective decision-making, including from senior executives at Ciena/Blue Planet.      The program fee is $495. WTCI Scholarship availability is limited. WTCI will review applications until July 23rd and will conduct interviews until July 31st. The application form is fairly straightforward and if students need more time to collect recommendations, they can email fellowships@wtci.org to let us know (forms need to be received prior to interviews). I'm excited to share that I've been awarded a full scholarship to attend the Student Global Leadership Conference hosted by FIE: Foundation for International Education in London, UK. This year's theme was Leadership and Mental Health: Equal Opportunities to Thrive. I would like to extend my gratitude to Teens of Color Abroad for bringing this incredible opportunity to my attention. Participating in this two-day conference, listening to remarkable panelists and speakers, and actively engaging in discussions were incredibly rewarding experiences. My key takeaways are listed below. Key Takeaways: - Embrace Emotions for Growth: Success isn't solely about overcoming emotions but rather using them as catalysts for growth. The real goal is to thrive because of our emotions, not despite them. - Lean Into Anxiety: It's important to recognize that anxiety only controls us if we allow it to. By embracing it, we can harness its energy for personal development. - Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: Identify the root causes of imposter syndrome, such as societal pressures, negative comments, and personal insecurities. Utilize assumptions and recognize the inherent value in diverse life experiences. Embrace imposter syndrome as a natural byproduct of stepping outside our comfort zones. Additionally, this opportunity allowed me to explore London for the first time, an experience for which I am incredibly grateful! Immersing myself in London's rich history, diverse communities, and vibrant cultural tapestry was truly eye-opening. My experience had broadened my perspective, deepened my understanding of global interconnectedness, and ignited a profound appreciation for the diversity of human experiences. In summary, the SGLC conference was a transformative experience that taught me to embrace emotions, confront imposter syndrome, and step further outside my comfort zone. I'm eager to integrate these invaluable insights into my career moving forward. Armed with a deeper understanding of emotional intelligence, resilience, and the importance of embracing diverse perspectives, I'm confident in my ability to navigate future challenges and seize opportunities with clarity and purpose. I am also thankful to my wonderful Posse Mentor, Stephen Cooper, for crafting a letter of recommendation on my behalf for this program.

It is not enough to be a technical expert. Last night was the first class for the CxO Forum spring semester class at the University of Cincinnati, where I had the pleasure of engaging with a group of 45 talented technology graduate students. Kicking off the session with a discussion on career success, I emphasized a crucial point: "It is not enough to be a technical expert if you aspire to progress into an IT leadership position." In preparation for the class, I reach back into articles and books on career success and leadership. Beginning the class with a powerful quote from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, which asserts that "85% of your financial success is due to your personality and ability to communicate," the class discussed the significance of attributes and activities that require little or no technical skill but are important to career success highlighting communication and networking. What I believe is meaningful for the students is weaving personal stories around nuggets of advice from leadership and career experts, connecting these insights to my own career journey. From successes and failures to pivotal moments and lessons learned, these narratives breathe life into the discussion. As the saying goes, "if I only knew then what I know now." The students are fueled by the curiosity and energy of youth, and we are off to a promising start. I'm eagerly anticipating the upcoming weeks, where we'll delve into more stories from other leaders in the IT community.
