“Despite the massive number of tech industry layoffs, the paradox is that there is still a high demand and fierce competition between employers to attract top talent,” Nik Froehlich noted in Forbes. “Hiring and retaining quality tech talent has become increasingly challenging due to rapidly evolving technology and changing employee expectations.” Three key factors contributing to the situation are competition, the need for growth and development opportunities, and the persistent skills gap. https://lnkd.in/g4dMfKfy

CEO, 1440: one of the fastest-growing US media brands | Delivering knowledge without motives to 4M+ intellectually curious readers | Former PE/VC, expanding capital access | Sharing insights on my journey as a CEO
In an industry notorious for cutthroat competition, razor-thin profit margins, and frequent layoffs, it's easy to lose sight of what truly matters: the people who make it all possible. That's why I am so thrilled to announce 1440 has been named one of Inc. Magazine’s Best Workplaces for 2024. When we founded 1440, we set out to create a different kind of media company—one that prioritizes curiosity, being human, and building a world-class people culture. So, from the get-go, we decided this: to put our people first. Here’s how we do that: ✅ I have monthly "happiness check-ins" with each team member in addition to constantly seeking feedback (surveys and a dedicated Slack channel) on ways we can improve our employee experience. ✅ We proactively provide raises without employees ever asking (occurs ~2x/year/employee). Our employees add tremendous value, and we aim to make their comp commensurate with the value they provide to 1440 by offering well above-market salaries, regular raises, and upside in our company’s long-term success. ✅ We offer the best benefits we possibly can (we just provided a new body scan benefit) and aim to provide better packages than companies we most admire (e.g., Airbnb) even though we are (currently) small in comparison. ✅We allow our colleagues total peace of mind at work as we take care of their entire family’s healthcare benefits. ✅We work incredibly hard to create boundaries: We never (ever!) communicate on weekends, and we hang it up after work hours so folks can be the best parents/friends outside of work they can be. ✅ We regularly share company financials, all key metrics, and the larger team strategy: Every employee knows our vision, strategies, and where we’re going. ✅ We don’t hire employees unless we can see them having a home at 1440 for a decade or more (assuming they perform to our high standards, of course). ✅ We aim to have some fun. Life is short; we want to enjoy spending time with each other, the highlight of which occurs during our company’s summer and winter full-team, weeklong offsites. The result? Proof that putting people first is actually excellent for profitability, too. 1440’s highly profitable business model has also seen 2,238% three-year growth, which recently landed us the 79th spot on Inc. Magazine’s fastest-growing US companies list. But this award isn't just about 1440’s team. It's about proving there's a better way to build a successful company—one that doesn't sacrifice its values or its most important asset, its people, in pursuit of the bottom line. ✅This award further motivates our team to continue building a media business that not only delights our 3.6M+ intellectually curious readers and partners, but remains a place where our colleagues can do their best work and still have the freedom to be their best selves outside the office, all while having some fun. What are you doing to make sure your employees are their best selves? #peoplefirst #bestworkplaces #inc #media

For tech workers, the specter of layoffs continues to loom large, with good reason. According to Layoffs.fyi, an online tracker of job losses in the technology sector, 436 tech companies have laid off at least 137,050 employees so far this year. But that doesn’t necessarily indicate a lack of jobs for tech workers. Many tech companies are hiring, investing in their employees and growing their skill sets. In fact, top companies across all sectors—not only technology—are providing tech employees with positive job experiences, particularly in regard to training opportunities that incentivize employees to stay.
