Happy Lunar New Year! This holiday is a celebration of the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. It represents a fresh start and hopes for a year of prosperity and happiness. Lunar New Year is observed in most East Asian countries including China, Vietnam, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Philippines, and Indonesia, celebrated by more than 1.5 billion people. 2024 is the year of the dragon! The dragon is the only animal on the Chinese zodiac that is a mythical creature. In Chinese culture, dragons symbolize good luck, strength and power. Los Angeles Times Did you know that Lunar New Year lasts for 15 days? This year, the holiday starts today and culminates with the lantern festival on February 24th. People generally celebrate with quality family and friend time, fireworks, dancing, lanterns, red envelopes with cash gifts, and traditional foods such as yuanxiao (sticky rice balls that symbolize family unity), fagao (prosperity cake), and yusheng (raw fish and vegetable salad), examples of Chinese dishes, according to Britannica.
