Perhaps not so secret. Residential Assistant work is a nuanced, multifunctional, and critical first responder role with duties increasingly perceived by students as inherently conflicting. RAs are tasked with managing a relational, community-building imperative; requisite health, wellness, and safety monitoring; policing aspects with regard to policies, rules, and law; event planning; and facility stewardship. Many feel their ability to simply succeed, never mind flourish, is significantly imperiled. Moreover, that circumstances often leading them to the work (a need for housing and food security) make them particularly vulnerable and fearful of retaliation.
