DDH was proud to join the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic, where our team was able to connect one-on-one with disabled Veterans and witness their "Miracles on the Mountainside." Thank you for the opportunity, DAV (Disabled American Veterans)!
Are you looking for a way for your company to give back to veterans? Check out this incredible article from Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare to read about the group of volunteers that they sent to attend the 2024 National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic. Their team had a great week volunteering in Snowmass, Colorado, helping DAV and the VA with a multitude of tasks and changing the lives of the veteran athletes in attendance.

In our ongoing commitment to support the GAA community, we are excited to introduce a meaningful research project aimed at enhancing the volunteer experience. Spearheaded by Hannah Pugh, with supervision from Dr Patrick Delaney and myself at SETU Waterford, and the invaluable support of Peter Horgan, Ruairí Harvey, Emmet Haughian, and GAA, Ladies Gaelic Football Association, and Camogie Association, we invite all current Club Officers or anyone who has held such a role in the last five years to contribute to this initiative.
The survey, endorsed by all Associations, has specific goals, including the examination of the demographic profile of Club Officers, understanding their motivations for volunteering, and gaining insights into their roles and workloads. Ultimately, the findings aim to improve the recruitment, retention, and support of Club Officers within Gaelic Games Associations.
All responses will be kept anonymous. However, participants completing the survey will have the option to provide their name (separate from their answers). Those opting in may be considered for involvement in later focus groups. These groups will delve deeper into identified issues and opportunities, forming the foundation of a volunteer strategy set to be released later in 2024.
Key areas to be explored within the strategy include:
1. **Sustainable Volunteering Culture:**
- Identification of existing volunteer roles and sub-committees.
- Clarification of their purposes and definitions.
- Analysis of collaboration among these roles and committees.
- Exploration of potential organizational changes to alleviate administrative burdens on volunteers.
2. **Recruitment and Retention of Volunteers:**
- Purposeful strategies to attract individuals suited for specific roles.
- Promotion of diversity in the volunteer profile, including increased participation from females, younger individuals, and those not traditionally associated with Gaelic Games.
3. **Supports for Volunteers:**
- Enhancement of accessibility for existing supports.
- Continuous updates and additions to support structures in line with volunteer needs.
Hannah has been driving the project with incredible dedication, and we encourage your participation in this study by completing and sharing the survey.
Thank you for your invaluable contribution to the improvement of the volunteer experience in Gaelic Games Associations.

"Whatever you think a nonprofit should be doing, these guys do the opposite." - Best compliment ever...
Among the many things we do that are antithetical to how nonprofits are "supposed" to operate, we go out of our way to avoid partnerships with big companies...the supposed "whales" who can write big checks...and partner with smaller companies who care about what we do and why we do it.
One of our favorites are the folks at Teton Sports, who quietly and without fanfare provide us with high-end backpacks we use at almost all our Special Operations Events. Today another massive shipment of their gear arrived to help prepare us for the upcoming events season.
To the entire team at TETON Sports - THANK YOU!!
And to all of you - do yourself a favor and support smaller, more authentic organizations like Teton Sports, who not only make great products, but embody a culture of generosity and abundance in everything they do.

Are 5K's the key to the future of trail running?
Yesterday I was curious about one of the fastest growing races on the platform - Healdsburg Turkey Trot - by Skip Brand and his team. I wanted to know how many of the thousands of runners in this race were new to the UltraSignup platform. So, I asked our data guru - Matt Abbott - to find out.
The results - 2/3 of the runners were new to the platform. That's huge. So, that means, because of the efforts of Skip and his team, thousands of people have now had exposure to the broader community of trail adventures.
Certainly, many of these runners will race more of Skip's races, but they will also explore races from other directors. This is the power of the community. Skip's efforts to put on a local 5K will have ripple effects across the sport.
How far will the ripples go? That's hard to tell. A certain percentage of these racers will sign up for other races in the next weeks, months, and years. They will also brings friends along with them to share the experience with. Then the ripples will extend into their circles of friends. These are network effects in action.
So, I would encourage all of our race directors to think about the power of the 5K, even if it's not on a trail. New Years Day resolution runs, St. Paddy day, Firecrackers 5Ks, Turkey Trots, etc. They may be the key to the long-term growth of our sport. Providing these athletes with an entry point into this awesome community is so powerful. Creating an accessible laddering of distances will pay dividends for you and for the sport more broadly. Just look at the number of kids in the photos - the future members of our sport right up front!
Great work Skip and our team is cheering you on!

It’s clear we have so much potential and value to offer yet it also can be discouraging when we are not presented with the opportunity to display any of this to an employer. I believe it is important to stay engaged, it's an excellent way to boost mental well-being. Volunteering is one of the best ways to do this, you contribute to the community and your mental well-being. Animal shelters are often looking for people. Many local libraries and/or rec centers may offer free activities. There are online workshops and classes available (Udemy has a great selection of free ones, you just may need to do a little navigating on their webpage). The development where we live offers weekly pickleball, line dancing, and water volleyball, among others, which are great ways to stay physically active and take your mind off things for a bit. (I personally recommend water volleyball 🏐😊)
What is your favorite way to stay engaged?

Transforming Jefferson County: The Birth of FCSO's FAT to Fit Olympic Games
In 2011, the small yet determined community of Jefferson County, Mississippi, faced a startling revelation. A local news broadcast on WJTV Channel 12, coupled with an in-depth report from the Clarion Ledger Jackson newspaper, declared Jefferson County as "the fattest county in America." This eye-opening moment became the catalyst for a transformative journey led by the Fayette Community Service Organization (FCSO), spearheaded by Mr. Anthony Edwards and Mrs. Janell Westley-Edwards.
A Wake-Up Call and a Vision
The news struck a chord with the Edwards, who had recently attended the Global Obesity Summit in Jackson, MS. Inspired by the summit’s call to action and armed with a wealth of knowledge, they returned to Jefferson County with a renewed sense of purpose. They saw the health crisis in their community not as a deterrent but as an opportunity to ignite change and promote a culture of wellness.
Remarkable Achievements of the FAT to Fit Olympic Games
Over the years, FTFOG has achieved remarkable milestones:
- Conducted 15,883 free health screenings.
- Awarded 1,101 new bicycles.
- Distributed approximately $12,100 in cash prizes, health equipment, health gear, and apparel.
- Attracted participants from 13 Mississippi counties and six states nationwide.
- Engaged four local municipalities as official members of the FAT to Fit Family network, including Jefferson County Board of Supervisors and the City of Vicksburg.
**Expanding Horizons: Georgia 2024**
As FCSO prepares to host the FAT to Fit Olympic Games in Savannah, Georgia, this August, the spirit of community-driven health advocacy remains strong. Janell Westley-Edwards, a beloved health advocate from Savannah, has taken the lead, continuing the legacy of inspiring healthy living and community empowerment.
**A Call to Action**
FCSO invites community members, local businesses, and media outlets to join in this transformative journey. The FAT to Fit Olympic Games is more than an event; it is a movement towards a healthier, happier future for all. Together, we can combat childhood obesity and promote wellness in every corner of our communities.
