What is the shortest word in English that contains the letters ABCDEF? Hint: You can give and receive it. This week, at the American Chamber of Commerce Japan, we explored how to become more likable professionals.  And I tested some of my standup comedy jokes. It’s possible they might not like me anymore…  😂 Whenever I give a workshop, I want to know if they received the material well or if it needs to be improved. So, instead of wondering if I delivered value to my audience, I ask them for FEEDBACK (before ending the session) in exchange for a gift. In this case, it was additional resources to learn more about the topics covered. If you present online or offline, using a service such as Talkadot is a simple way to get instantaneous feedback and allow your audience to connect with you after the event. You can also use the comments as social proof to book future speaking engagements. I used to ask the event organizers to send a feedback form in the past, but if I were lucky, I would get 20% of people filling out the form. When you do it during your speaker slot, you get about 90+% filling it out. Something for you to think about if you’re serious about keeping the conversation going. How do you get feedback? *** P.S. What's your tips for Public Speaking? I was asked this question recently... well sort of. It was more like "What's your top tips for doing stand up comedy". It did get me thinking though. The same tips work for both. So here are my top 3 tips that work for both public speaking and stand up comedy 🤩 1. Don’t Get Flustered! 😅 If you try and crack a joke, or present a new idea and it doesn’t land, don’t get flustered, move on! By getting flustered, your audience will die with you, meaning people will lose interest in what you're rabbiting on about. 2. Eye Contact. 👀 By maintaining strong eye contact, you add a human touch. That connection will engage your audience, allowing your points to be better established, understood and accepted. 3. Commit to your energy! 🔥 Once you start in your personal style, the room will expect that style to be maintained throughout your talk, whether you are trying to establish a new idea, or make people laugh, don’t let the energy fizzle out.
