I've been married for just over a year, and I can already tell that this piece of advice will make my marriage so much stronger. I'm currently reading "Fight Right" by the Gottmans, and the key nugget I've picked out is that we must validate what our partner is feeling, even if we don't agree. That validation alone, letting them sit with it while we hold space, that's what determines a successful relationship.

I agree with Dr. Michael Gervais. People in emotional pain, don't want a Pollyanna response or even worse a lack of acknowledgement of pain with a parental reply such as "Well you know Jane has it much worse than you." People need you to 'join them in their pain'. To acknowledge their pain and show empathy if you know that pain or sincere caring with eye contact, pause and a hug, only if they signal they need and want your shoulder. After processing, it can be time for great change.

You have to live in pain to move forward. Many will contrast their current pain with the pain of moving forward to justify staying where they are. The human brain and its function to keep you alive has a lot to do with not moving forward

Facing pain head-on is never easy, but the rewards on the other side are immeasurable.

Hear hear, Mike! And an addendum that a stoic once told us, “in life we choose the pain of discipline or the pain of regret.”
