The Games also offered a glimpse into the future of urban development, particularly through the Olympic Village designed by Dream Architecture. As I watched the closing ceremony, I couldn’t help but think about the legacy these Games will leave behind—especially in the Saint-Denis district, where the Olympic Village will soon transform into a thriving, sustainable neighborhood. This project isn’t just about housing athletes; it’s about crafting a space that will continue to serve the community for years to come. What’s truly inspiring is how DREAM design balances function and sustainability. The buildings are energy-efficient, the rooftops are green, and public spaces are thoughtfully integrated to encourage community interaction. It’s a powerful reminder that architecture can—and should—be about more than just aesthetics; it should be about creating spaces that are adaptable and that enrich the lives of the people who use them. As we move forward, the lessons from Paris 2024 will hopefully inspire other cities. Gravatt Market Village reimagines the traditional farmers market as a dynamic hub for community interaction and cultural exchange. Designed to act as a social condenser, the market fosters meaningful connections between urban and rural communities while celebrating the importance of fresh, locally sourced produce. The proposal embraces a modular design strategy, ensuring flexibility and adaptability to meet the demands of Brisbane’s growing population. This approach allows the market to expand organically, accommodating an increasing number of vendors and visitors over time. Its pitched roof, inspired by the surrounding suburban context, seamlessly integrates the market into the neighborhood’s architectural fabric, striking a balance between functionality and aesthetic sensitivity. Beyond providing a platform for local farmers and artisans, the project enriches the community with multi-functional spaces, including studios, workshops, and classrooms. These spaces cater to a variety of activities, from creative endeavors to educational programs, fostering a vibrant environment for learning and collaboration. To create a well-rounded experience, the design incorporates ample gathering areas, recreational facilities, and picturesque picnic spots. The second of our 2 nominees for the 2024 @aiaeb Design Awards is not a single project but a design system for missing middle housing. We were able to effectively quintuple density by creating townhomes that effectively consisted of 5 studio apartments each (getting a sink in the bedroom is a trick!). We were also able to reduce parking /6 with this method (+bike parking). From the submission: “A systematic approach to tackling the housing crisis through a deployable, cost-effective design was Implemented across multiple sites. These included ArtHouse Six and ArtHouse Magnolia in Oakland. The system has proven its potential to reduce housing costs by increasing production, offering an innovative solution that can be replicated across other sites to meet the growing demand for affordable housing. Both sites deliver a mix of suites featuring private kitchenettes, storage, and natural light, designed to support both comfort and affordability. The projects prioritize community with shared spaces that foster connection among residents, promoting a sense of belonging.” Winners to be announced next week!

🌍 As Global Eye Turns to Paris, Milan’s Timber Village Takes Shape! 🥇 While the world focuses on Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, construction crews in Milan are hard at work on the Athletes Village for the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Games. This "self-sustaining neighbourhood," designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), is set to open in July 2025 and will feature solar panels, roof gardens, and mass timber systems. 🔍 Why This Matters: 1️⃣ Sustainable Design: The Athletes Village will be the first to meet NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) requirements and be constructed with minimal environmental impact. Timber-rich structures will feature cross-laminated timber panels, floors, and glulam beams. 2️⃣ Legacy Planning: Post-Games, the village will transform into a vibrant, autonomous neighbourhood focused on social equity, environmental commitment, wellness, and inclusivity. This means it will play a key role in guiding future development and determining planning applications for the area. RCKa worked alongside 5th Studio to develop the spatial masterplan - our focus being new residential areas to complement 5th Studio industrial expertise - that over the coming decade will transform Staples Corner into a vibrant, mixed-use neighbourhood.
