The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) College of Architecture complex houses two of the most historic buildings on the UNL campus, including the UNL Library, established c. 1895. Timberlyne Group incorporated an entirely mass timber structure in phase two of the remodel, with a four-story pavilion designed by HDR, featuring 31 new studio spaces, a student lounge, and an additional crit space. “The students who occupy this building will be inspired by our example of how to push the envelope of designing and building unique mass timber structures," shared Jared Casey, Timberlyne Project Manager. Students and alumni played a key role in shaping the design of the new Hayu alqi uyxat building in Portland, Oregon, which creates a permanent home for Portland Public Schools' Multiple Pathways to Graduation program. The Type III-V project features three stories of above-grade mass timber construction (with glulam columns, beams, and girders) and one below-grade level made of concrete. An acoustic metal deck above its concreate floor to provide sound insulation.
