Florida Exception: In Florida, physicians working for the federal government or the Department of Defense (DoD) are typically exempt from state medical licensing requirements. This exception allows these medical professionals to practice without needing a state license, as long as they are working within the scope of their federal employment. This regulatory exception is part of a broader effort to streamline the process for healthcare professionals working in federal institutions or for the military, ensuring they can provide care without the added burden of state-specific licensure processes. The Florida Department of Health outlines various licensing and regulatory procedures but recognizes the federal exemption for those employed by the government or the DoD (Florida Health) (Florida Board of Medicine) (Florida Board of Medicine).

The Defense Health Agency investigates concerns about health care providers in DOD medical facilities to ensure military service members receive high-quality and safe health care. If DHA finds evidence of concerns, it must report providers to a federal database that allows hospitals and others to screen providers. But we found DHA didn’t always report providers within the required 30-day timeframe and it hasn’t set timeliness standards for other important steps.
