Just participating in this exciting seminar: in the end, collecting funds and resurces is always the most critical passage for every institution.

Not entirely satisfied with accounts that describe ethics as merely an act of proper reasoning, I have been on the lookout for thinkers who propose alternative perspectives on ethics. In my search, I recently stumbled upon a book by Jane Addams: "Democracy and Social Ethics." It is fascinating. A book synopsis by U of Illinois Press sums up her stance nicely: "Nearly a century before the advent of 'multiculturalism,' Jane Addams put forward her conception of the moral significance of diversity. Each member of a democracy, Addams believed, is under a moral obligation to seek out diverse experiences, making a daily effort to confront others' perspectives. Morality must be seen as a social rather than an individual endeavor, and democracy as a way of life rather than merely a basis for laws. Failing this, both democracy and ethics remain sterile, empty concepts." A social perspective on ethics is very valuable for how we approach ethics in organizations. Whether an organization has ethical resilience very much depends on the nature of the social relations among them. Are there few or many social links? Is ethical influence flowing mostly top to bottom, or is it encouraged to flow in any direction? What is the quality of social bonds? Are they based on authority, fear; or on caring and trust? - The social fabric inside of an organization determines in large part its ethical character. The question than is: How does this insight shape how we design codes, trainings, leadership development, etc.

And no, I had never heard of Jane Addams, even though I have a master’s degree in Business Ethics! I am going to have to read her writings now! I often speak fondly of my Grandmama's quilts. The quilts are much more than scraps of fabric, thread, and batting. The quilts are lessons for our work to end the epidemic. We are Quilters, creating a beautiful patchwork quilt. A patchwork to erase stigma, create equitable systems, and embody social & healing justice. There are quilts that haven't been started some that have been started but haven't yet been finished. Today, I had the wonderful opportunity to present a project I created to Introduction to Advertising with Meghnaa Tallapragada! This project was created during my experience on the Rocking the World Klein Global Opportunities trip I attended in January, organized by Hannah Braid, M.S.Ed. and Allie K Miller. The text for our course was Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson. It dives deep into the creation and reinforcement of caste systems, examining the caste system of India, the Holocaust, and Slavery in the U.S. Meghnaa, David W. Brown, Dana Saewitz, and the rest of our class, traveled to Washington D.C. to visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Then, I created my project, titled Fatphobias Roots in Anti-Blackness, in which I explore and define many concepts. What is fatphobia, how does it relate to caste, and why should we care about it? Where did this bias come from? This led me to explore the roots of fatphobia and find that it historically stems from anti-blackness. The end goal was to connect Fatphobia, Anti-Blackness, and Caste systems together to form a more intentional view of how we view the world. The most important part of this process is questioning how can we disrupt this caste system? What systematic barriers are oppressing larger and marginalized bodies? How do you or the people around you talk about body image? Are you calling out the anti-fat rhetoric in discussions with friends, families, doctors, etc.? Are fat folks demonized while thin bodies prevail? How do you see fat bodies portrayed in the media? Do you consume media that center fat bodies in a positive light? Where their bodies, insecurities, and pursuit of becoming smaller are NOT the main plot line? Since Caste is all about disrupting, I ask you to carry these questions with you. Purposefully take the time to examine how the Caste system and fatphobia cloud your view of the world. And if you have some time, take a look at my full project linked below. I speak of lynching a lot when it comes to professional spaces. It triggers some people, but there are numerous parallels to the atrocities that occurred during the US Civil Rights Movement and what continues to occur in supposed professional spaces. I use this word because no one goes to work to get slaughtered. Employees expect to be safe or at least move through an equitable process that allows them to share their truths and seek justice when rules aren't followed. Some points I've observed: 1. People who lynch people in professional spaces think they will not be punished for their actions, otherwise the wouldn’t attempt to be so evil. 2. Systems often uphold the heinous acts of harm against employees despite evidence that confirms a workplace lynching has occurred. 3. People who witness lynchings at work often remain silent for fear of retaliation or harm to them in the same way someone was lynched.
