It helps millers the world over enrich flour with essential micronutrients, cost-effectively and efficiently. Why is this so important? Hidden hunger is a global problem. Often there is sufficient food available, but it doesn’t supply all the necessary nutrients. Last Friday, we presented this to a delegation from the Flemish political party Vooruit with among others Jeroen Soete, Steve Vandenberghe and Jarni Vandenberghe in our Marine@UGent labo's at Ostend Science Park. 1. Nutrition: More than a billion people worldwide rely on the sea as their primary source of protein. Fish and seafood are rich in essential nutrients and omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for heart and brain health. 2. Healthcare: The biodiversity of the ocean is a rich resource for medical research and the development of medicines, including ingredients used in pain relievers, anti-inflammatories, and even cancer treatments. 3. Wellbeing (Blue Gym Effect): People who live by the sea are more active and feel healthier. With our Marine@UGent researchers, we are committed to increase our understanding of these interactions for both humans and the sea.
