How often should you update your investors ❓ It's a question you'll soon be asking yourself, especially when it comes to your business. Sometimes it's already defined in a shareholders' agreement - sometimes it's up to you to decide. The short answer is: If your business is changing a lot, it should be done more regularly. If your business is stable, it can be done more frequently and in more depth. To put this into perspective, when you are starting a business, the investor update should only contain the most important information and questions (what do you need from your investors). It should take no more than 1 hour to produce, but it will give you additional clarity. All the information in it (sales, marketing, cash flow) should be available to you and no external help should be needed. So producing it once a month should be feasible without distracting you. As your business becomes more stable, the report should focus more on in-depth (financial/operations) information. A quarterly report will give an indication of growth and where the business is going. In-depth reports will also require the work of your management team - so they will take more effort to produce.
