Why my reaction on the ProVeg International and De Telegraaf publication is so fierce. About 3,5 years ago veggie became a real hype. After trying some, (because I thought it would be better for my health), I figured out that the nutrional value at that time was just horrible. Way worse than the more natural or old fashioned options. Over the years they did improve the receipes luckily. But still: Only Veg is no solution for health, nor climate change. Why this report is misleading: 1. The big brands that we compared score better in meat options than veg options. So to claim that PB contains less saturated, is just untrue. 2. Less than 5G of sugar per 100gr in plantbased, is just as misleading as high in protein on egg products. Come on, 5gr in a product is considered a cookie. 3. Come on and comparing Fibers in meat? If you are looking for fibers in a whole piece of meat, you need to go back to high school. I am a very big fan as you may know, of #hybridmeat . Nederlandse vleesvervangers en plantaardige melk hebben wereldwijd de beste voedingswaarde! 🍔 🥛 Daarnaast zijn ze qua samenstelling ook vaak gezonder dan vergelijkbare dierlijke producten. 💪 Dit alles blijkt uit nieuw onderzoek van mijn collega's bij ProVeg International. Zij bekeken de voedingswaardes van 673 plantaardige producten uit 11 landen, waarvan 422 vleesvervangers en 251 soorten plantaardige melk. Behalve uit Nederland komen de onderzochte producten uit België, Duitsland, het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Polen, Tsjechië, Italië, Spanje, de Verenigde Staten, Zuid-Afrika en Maleisië. Met name plantaardige worst, kipnuggets en spek hebben internationaal gemiddeld een gezondere samenstelling dan vergelijkbare dierlijke producten. 🌭 🥓 De voedingswaardes van plantaardig gehakt, burgers, kipstukjes en kipfilets scoorden vergelijkbaar met die van de dierlijke versies. 🍗 🍝 De onderzochte plantaardige melksoorten — sojamelk, havermelk, kokosmelk en amandelmelk — bleken in verschillende landen net zo goed of zelfs beter te zijn dan koemelk. Good news: Dutch people demand more commitment to the protein transition! 🙌 In their recently published report, ProVeg Nederland describes the findings of their research aimed at better understanding Dutch people’s support for the protein transition and the potential measures that can help support this transition. 💡 The survey, that was carried out amongst more than 9,000 Dutch people, revealed some valuable insights: - 66% of respondents believe we need to consume more plants and less animal products. - Food producers, supermarkets, and restaurants are perceived to bear more responsibility for changing the food system than the government. - Almost three-quarters of participants want to see more plant-based options in supermarkets and restaurants. - 61% support replacing animal-based ingredients in products with plant-based ingredients, such as egg in sauces or butter in pastries. - 68% support reducing the prices of plant-based products and creating price parity between plant- and animal-based products. - The average preferred protein ratio amongst respondents is 57% plant-based and 43% animal-based: that’s almost the opposite of the current consumption trend! Great news! 📣 Lidl België & Luxemburg will permanently reduce the prices of their plant based alternatives! This decision is made after the research that is done recently, 4 out of 10 (42%) Belgians want to reduce their intake of animal protein and are more likely to buy vegan products if they are more affordable. 49% of the respondents think that plant based alternatives for animal protein are more expensive. By the reduction of the prices Lidl want to make it easier for their customers to choose for a plant based alternative. The supermarket chain aims to significantly increase the share of its plant-based protein sources to 20% by 2030.
