Folks that know me know I'm a huge fan of R&D and infrastructure. Theres a solid argument that the combination forms the most impactful role state education agencies can play. So I was excited to see this new brief outlining how states can build effective R&D infrastructure to drive students' outcomes. Jointly published by Education Reimagined, Transcend, and the Alliance for Learning Innovation (ALI), it contains actionable recommendations for states around prioritizing education R&D, as well as examples of states that are harnessing R&D to meet the needs of students and communities. The Fourth Portal strapline, 'The Past and Future always meet in the Present' embodies the jewellery making classroom in the Kent Adult Education Victoria Centre, Gravesend. The layout, natural light and smell of history and learning scattered amongst the modern tools set the tone for the incoming student to take from the past to create something new for the future. The visit formed part of the latest Fourth Portal newspaper interview series on innovation in the borough of Gravesham. Michelle Bramble, Kent County Council Curriculum Lead spoke of the challenges facing adult education, including a perception problem. Creative, non-certificated courses have been sidelined by the previous government funding round and will be impacting those classes hard. Within the coming newspaper, Fourth Portal will lay out why creative courses will be the bedrock of the new economy, as traditional thinking engineers, lawyers, doctors and teachers find themselves sidelined by the rapidly emerging technologies.  The Fourth Portal newspaper, Issue 2 on innovation, will be available in Autumn 2024.  www.fourthportal.com #adulteducation #lifelonglearning #newtechnology #newskills #reskill #stem #steam #gravesend #fourthportal #hub #innovationspace

When states establish a strategic vision for innovation and R&D in education, they can dramatically improve student engagement and outcomes. While there are pockets of innovation across the country, strengthening the education R&D infrastructure can provide systemic solutions to the biggest challenges states are tackling. Thank you @Education Reimagined, @Transcend, and the @Alliance for Learning Innovation for their new brief on how R&D across systems can be a powerful force for modernizing education. I particularly love how this work brings together both (1) infrastructure needs for strong state R&D (e.g., modernized SLDS; technical assistance; networks) and (2) the conditions needed for strong state R&D (e.g., dedicated R&D leadership; empowered local leaders; mindset shifts). Sharing a news story about the important role special education collaboratives serve in providing high quality services to Massachusetts school districts' students. This story highlights a student attending Northshore Education Consortium, and the challenges facing collaboratives and districts. This is not about one child, or one collaborative, but rather a system of collaboratives that support students statewide.  Massachusetts Organization of Education Collaboratives (MOEC) plans to generate and share additional stories to elevate the work of collaboratives across the Commonwealth.
