During the 23-24 school year, 3rd-8th grade students in the City of Fort Worth met grade-level standards just 35% of the time. This shocking number is far lower in some regions of the City. On the East side, one of the middle schools has students meeting grade-level standards just 7% of the time. But what does this mean exactly? Imagine 100 eighth-grade students preparing to enter high school. Only 7 of them are well prepared for success. The other 93 are on a path to dropping out or barely graduating, unprepared for college, career, or military service. A-freakin’-men… …now, let’s talk about what that means when we’re looking at pay and benefits structures, too. I mean, think about it, is it enough to say that, “You made the decision. You didn’t promote. Go suck an egg if you’re hungry, but this is all we’ll pay you for your services.” Or, should it be that demonstrated proficiency increases also trigger the money machine to move your way? Really, it comes down to a matter of the organization’s philosophy (not just values in isolation, but the totality of values as their expressed in word and deed) - and here I think (IMHO) there’s a ton more meta cognitive reflection to be done at the individual/tactical, managerial/operational, and executive/strategic levels of business, industry, and institution.

A mind shift in people management, re-imagining the business model and new ways to promote and manage careers. This resonates deeply.

Economic Growth is a similar misguided mindset that we should challenge in our current global environment. This endith the lesson. Consider a balanced approach to life, the universe and everything. Maybe the answer is 43? #LearnFromNature #SharingTheLoveGlobalMentors

1000% It should even be okay for a manager to be paid less than a high value IC. There is nothing wrong with this. It's about the value we bring the company, in the context of our maturity in our function. We need to stop making "leadership" the top of the ladder, and instead make "value" (people, revenue, process) the top of the ladder; and reward people accordingly. If we stop glorifying leadership for its own sake, we'll stop promoting people into failure just in order to pay them more.

People who are willing to take risk and try new ideas, will always raise their hands and come forward to take up new positions or role. There are also people who are happy in their current role and don’t wanted go too fast or take up extra challenges. As leaders we have to respect and appreciate both type of people. We don’t have to push them hard and force them to pick new roles.
