In recent years, we've seen a decline in volunteerism, and it's time we reflect on why this is happening. Many potential volunteers find it challenging to discover meaningful opportunities, and in our fast-paced world, time is a precious commodity. Additionally, stepping into a new environment alone can be daunting, and volunteer opportunities must be engaging and fulfilling. Many individuals may not be aware of the diverse range of volunteer opportunities available to them, and some may question the impact of their volunteer efforts, leading to a sense of disillusionment. Those who have previously volunteered may also experience burnout, leading to a reluctance to commit to new opportunities. To address these challenges, organizations and communities must collaborate in reimagining the volunteer experience. By fostering a culture of inclusivity and support and addressing barriers, we can reignite the spirit of volunteerism and create positive change together. How much local, state, and federal funding, tax credits, or other government benefits or incentives did the project receive? 2. What is the affordability period for each project? Is the affordability period permanent and in perpetuity? 3. What guarantees exist have your local, state, and federal government officials obtained in writing that rents will not go up or that tenants will not be displaced or evicted after the "affordability period expires? I'm all for civic duty. I do believe that it creates community spirit and civic pride. Throughout my life, I have volunteered and my life is richer for it. It's made me more appreciative, more empathetic, and less judgemental. Helping others and doing good triggers oxytocin, serotonin, dopamine in both those helping and those receiving the help. We all win. And while I'd love to see 18yr olds and people of all ages benefiting from community volunteering, I don't agree that we should make voluntary work mandatory. Forcing people to undertake community work has been up until now a punishment and is considered a punishment. Making 18yrs do voluntary work is not going to build community spirit and break down barriers. Instead you'll build resentment, reduce motivation, and impact on the quality of support given, possibly removing good will. That's why with One Sky Collective our approach is to encourage and empower people to take part in social impact activities that they are passionate about. They'll be fun, educational and also rewarding, both socially and financially. You'll receive products, discounts, access to events and services for making a difference. We are currently organising our initial events, planned for September, and we should be working with some exciting brands and organisations. So, rather than forcing people to do good, let's reward them for doing good. Who prefers that approach? #nationalservice #communitywork

🌿 A Deep Dive into Community, Challenges, and Change at the Shropshire Inclusion Network Gathering 🌿 Last Tuesday was no ordinary Tuesday - we were in the heart of North Shropshire, at the historic Oswestry Memorial Hall, surrounded by some of the most passionate and driven individuals I’ve ever met. All thanks to the #ShropshireInclusionNetwork. The gathering was personally impactful. It wasn’t just about the struggles of starting a rural business—though we talked plenty about that. It was about understanding the extra hurdles faced by those dealing with trauma, mental health issues, and simply trying to find support in places where it seems scarce. Oswestry Memorial Hall itself played a big role in our discussions. Donated by Mrs. Parry Jones in 1906, this place isn’t just a building; it’s a living legacy of community support. It was fascinating to hear from Paul Newman, our host, about its history and how it continues to be a hub for making, selling, and connecting. But it was the people, not just the place, that made the day. Paul shared how he works to knit different organisations and individuals into a community tapestry that’s stronger and more vibrant for its diversity. Jo Hazell - Watkins from #TheSomaSpace and Ben Wilson from Osnosh CIC were standouts, sharing their journeys and how they use physical movement and food to bring people together and support those facing tough times. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and it feels like we’re onto something big here. Our aim is to keep this momentum going as we visit more rural spots across Shropshire, focusing on: 👍 Giving community supporters and business owners a space to recharge and learn. 👍 Driving home the importance of inclusion through real stories and practices. 👍 Boosting rural venues to bring benefits to the whole area. This wasn’t just another networking event. It was a reminder of the resilience and potential within our communities, and the power of coming together to face challenges head-on. 🎉 I am thrilled to share that I’ve been appointed to the cultural council for North Attleboro, a local chapter of the Massachusetts Cultural Council! (I’m talking “raise your right hand”, three-year term, official). 🙋♀️ This is: -Voluntary -Unpaid -Going to consume a portion of my already busy schedule So why am I thrilled? Because I’m passionate about community engagement and when asked why I applied for the position, my simple answer was, “We could do better”. 💪 As a marketing professional, I’m naturally inclined to observe interactions and identify areas of opportunity. And it’s really hard to keep good ideas to myself. 😏 Having a mindset of “if it doesn’t exist, make it happen” has given me tremendous leadership and growth opportunities, from establishing professional networking groups to getting involved with charity organizations. Usually, I’m “making it happen” for the first time with little to no experience, but I am confident I can make a difference. And the organizations that bring me onboard agree. 🎨🤝 🔬 Culture works through the arts, humanities, and sciences to enrich communities, grow the economy, increase accessibility, and foster individual creativity.
