📢 Did you know? Your body contains more bacterial cells than human cells! According to a 2016 study by the Weizmann Institute of Science, our cell count is 56% bacteria—less than previous estimates of 90%. However, bacteria make up just 200g of our body mass, meaning we're over 99.7% human by weight. Understanding the balance between human and bacterial cells can drive innovation in the life sciences, which is why ProcEurope is dedicated to supporting the advancement of research and development in life sciences. New Publication Alert! 🚀 I am thrilled to announce that our paper is finally out! Since plastic pollution still represents a serious environmental problem, this work contributes to the final aim of sustainable and efficient recycling and upcycling processes. Briefly, in this work, we deeply characterized Sis, a new PET-hydrolyzing enzyme that is phylogenetically distant from the previously identified PETases. Moreover, Sis' biochemical features could offer several advantages for various biotechnological applications. I would like to acknowledge my colleagues for their collaboration: Roberta Iacono, Valeria Cafaro, Elio Pizzo, Donato Giovannelli, Golo Feuerriegel, Wolfgang Streit, Andrea Strazzulli, and Marco Moracci. Thanks also to REPLAY project. For further information, check out the full article on International Journal of Molecular Sciences MDPI!

This week is #EarthWeek, and is a perfect time to highlight the environmental impact of cold storage and shipping in the life science, pharmaceutical, and biotech laboratory settings. Did you know? A single, ultra-cold freezer(-80C) consumes 15-32 kilowatts per hour which is an amount sufficient to power a typical home. Shipping on wet ice or dry ice often requires air transportation to ensure appropriate temperatures are maintained during shipping but results in the emission of 18-35 times the amount of CO2 when compared to ground transportation. Upkara's novel stabilization technology can stabilize many biomolecules(antibodies, enzymes, small molecules, and many more) for storage and shipping at ambient temperatures and can eliminate the need for cold storage and shipping. If you would like to learn more about our technology and how it can be leveraged to reduce cold chain costs let us know. Matthew Carroll #earthweek, #stabilizingscience
