Dear Cannabis Industry: A Reflection on Our Roots and Our Future   In recent years, the cannabis industry has become a reflection of some of the ugliest parts of society. It’s become acceptable for people to bring vitriol, division, and a cutthroat mentality into an industry that was never meant to be about tearing each other down. Too many now focus on defeating others out of fear, greed, or a lack of respect.   We’ve lost sight of the true spirit of cannabis. Cannabis has always been about love, unity, and community—bonding over buds, coming together in peace. There’s a rich history rooted in this plant, in healing, connection, and harmony. Can you imagine if world leaders sat in a circle, shared a cypher, and passed a blunt? We wouldn’t be standing on the edge of global conflict. If they embraced collaboration over competition, we’d be far from the brink of war.   But today, it seems we’ve traded in those principles for an attitude of domination at all costs. Collaboration has taken a backseat, and in its place, we see division. This mentality is not only tearing at the fabric of our society but also creeping into our industry. The boardroom antics, the ugly politics—it’s ripping our country apart, and we can’t let it do the same to our industry.   From the five boroughs of New York City, through the expansive gorge of the Hudson River Valley, north through the Adirondacks, and west to the majestic Niagara Falls, we need to reconnect with the ethos of cannabis: the plant, not the power struggle. We must remember the roots—literally and figuratively—that built this movement on love and unity.   Let’s get back to what cannabis was always about—community, not competition. I've been reflecting on the Benzinga Cannabis Market Spotlight conference in Los Angeles last week. My fellow panelists - Lauren Carpenter, Guy Rocourt, Mark Collins MBA - and I enjoyed the most upbeat and optimistic audience of the day. We talked about the outlook for retail and how dispensaries can increase profitability. But in other panel discussions and during 1:1 conversations in the hallways, the mood was very different. It was pessimistic, which is in sharp contrast to the general positive vibes California is known for. Look, I live in California so I understand the challenges - both in running successful businesses and dealing with the state government's tangle of red tape. It's not easy. It's not easy running any business, but cannabis is different and more difficult than most. But here's what I know: Those who bet against the industriousness of California usually leave the table with a losing hand. Our panel moderator, Ricardo Baca, asked us each a question near the end of our session: "What gets you out of bed every day to do the work you're doing?" For me, that's an easy one. If someone would have told the high school version of me that I'd one day make an honest living in the cannabis industry, it would have felt like a dream. And yet here I am. And here WE are. And we're all still here because a lot of people care deeply about this industry and are getting out of bed each day to make their dreams a reality. I know the California market will thrive because of the commitment and passion all these operators bring every day. #cannabisindustry #cannabisbusiness

What have I learned about the NY Cannabis Industry since starting my journey into this new space: 1. This is a very ego heavy industry - and as someone who promotes self-confidence I don't actually think this is a bad thing. Pride in our work is important. But with egos comes a sense of fragility when questioned. The rule of thumb that I have learned is to only offer my opinion when it is asked for...which honestly is a life lesson in general. 2. As many people take the plant out of the business as those who take the business out of the plant. In my opinion cannabis is equal parts medicine, sustainability, business, and pleasure....you need to have a balance of all 4 in order to cater to the wide range of consumers. If you don't want the business in your plants then I suggest growing for yourself only. 🤷♀️ 3. This is a creative industry. People ask how I went from photography to cannabis and the fact is this industry requires ingenuity and creativity. The OCM is strict - outside of the box thinking is imperative for reaching your audience while remaining fully compliant. This is probably my favorite thing I have learned so far. 4. Most people in the industry are not actually stoners. They are all consumers - but I haven't run into many "stoners" as we think about them based on the picture society has painted. I'll find my stoners at the Phish concerts I go to wayyyy more than I will in the legal cannabis industry. 5. EVERYTHING is hurry up and wait. This is a tough part - alot like the entertainment industry there are so many moving parts in this industry that we rush for the sale or connections and then have to wait on sign offs to put things into action. This can be very frustrating and disheartening. 6. This industry is more competitive than trying to land a role in Hollywood. 7. The work being done to destigmatize consumption is working! Every day I see more and more women from my network sharing that they consume and joining my fb group to meet others like them! It’s #TipTuesday (on a Tuesday! 😎 ) This week took 2 takes, but it’s here, and this one has some *zing*. It's one for the roots, and the suits, and everyone in between (speaking as someone who has lived on all sides of that equation...). There's a lot of people working in the #cannabisindustry, all over the world. And you're just one fish, in a (rapidly growing) pond. So, let’s start with some deep personal reflection… ‘How do you want to show up as a #professional in this global cannabis industry?’. But, seriously. How? And how does what you say/do/act/present reflect that? How will you choose to show up today, in 2024. In new markets, with new people, in boardrooms with strangers, on screens with people 1000's of miles away!? Because the cannabis industry is growing globally every day. More markets are coming online, more companies are getting started, more people are entering the game… We are winning in getting the plant to the people, and through it all, the world is watching. It’s cannabis’ time to shine on the global stage 🌎 But that means we’ve each got to polish up our act, to be ‘Professional’, To help the cannabis industry 'professionalize', And collectively play by the rules in the global 'business game’. Doesn’t matter if you’re a ‘Root’ or a ‘Suit’, you get to choose how you will show up as a human working in the cannabis space, or a company supporting the global supply chain. Don’t take that lightly, it’s all getting very real. So today’s tip encourages you to take some time to reflect on what 'professionalizing' means for you... 🌿 Who do you want to be as a cannabis professional, consultant or business owner in 2024 (and beyond)? 🌿 How will you share your story, wisdom, services, and product to others who don’t know you? 🌿 How do you want to show up as a representative for the Cannabis industry to the rest of the world? 🌿 How do you want to be perceived as a professional going into new markets/regions/companies who are new here in Cannabis, but often aren't new to business? Because at the end of the day, If you choose to show up as your best self, Your true self, Your 'professional' self,  Showcasing how you are global expert,  Sharing wisdom, insights, answers and solutions, But humbly introducing yourself as you go, Then you’re golden, and paving the way for us all to get to the Emerald City. As usual, my professional contact Stephanie Pow has knocked another one out of the park. As the old expression goes, "First impressions are the lasting impressions if not the only ones." implying that every meeting thereafter is an opportunity not available to initially impress upon a possible employer how you respect and present yourself. More likely and importantly, it is a key indicator of how that translates specifically to your behaviour in business and more generally, to your behaviour as well as towards others. Think of it as the first step in solving a math equation or problem in general. That is to say, prove it by showing your work as the objective. While there may be no more work than to not get flustered and lose the opportunity. The work is to simply talk to a potential employer without letting anxiety about the situation get the better of you .The foundation of that work is how you have been initially received and recognized thereafter. Correcting a negative impression may prove impossible or very challenging at best. The world is your oyster, too lose it is much easier than it is to gain it. The first step is about you and how you are perceived. Perception is quite often reality for many people. Additionally, few people will be interested in why this crucial first step has been ignored and therefore disrespectful or at best, uninterested in your employment prospects. For many, a tie is a sign of a professional with an appropriate button up shirt as a canvas underneath it. While this may not seem like an option for many woman, neck ties are NOT the exclusive domain of men. Choose a tie with some help if you need it. Many people are only too happy to help. For others, a tie seems like overkill or simply old fashioned. I've known many Chairmen, CEOs and others at the managerial level employees that I've never seen in a tie and shirt. Usually you'll find them in designer jeans and a button up cotton blend collared long-sleeve shirt or short sleeve. A full men's suit may not be needed. A sport jacket, blazer or suit top coat should be bought properly sized and with the help of a shop assistant using a mirror AFTER they have properly measured your dimensions. This is very important. PLEASE understand that spending a lot of money isn't necessary. In Canada it can be tax deductible for business owners. However, what is necessary is to look the part for the job your seeking. Don't forget about your footwear. People do look down! Think comfortable and effective as complementing the rest of your outfit and attitude. Act as if you are what you want to be doing in the future, not what you want to be. Be prepared. I'm certainly no authority on women's wear but any decent clothing store would love to help you figure it out. What I would say is the objective is the same whether your man or woman that is, getting the job. Don't compromise your values but be willing to adapt to how you're perceived to thrive in your new job!
