On June 19, 2024, we held Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) at Ahaba Oloko, bringing together selected women and community leaders from our two project communities. We conducted three separate FGDs with a total of 34 participants: two sessions for women from each community, comprising 10 participants per group, and one session for community leaders. This approach allowed us to gather a wide range of perspectives on gender-based violence (GBV) and normative approaches to addressing gender-based incidents in Ariam and Oloko communities. The primary objective of these discussions was to understand the prevalence and impact of GBV, the challenges faced by survivors, the effectiveness of existing support systems, and to identify gaps for improving GBV prevention and response. This is a crucial step in informing future interventions and policies. Participants shared their thoughts on several key issues. One significant point raised was the stigmatization faced by GBV survivors, which often prevents them from seeking help. Another critical issue discussed was the economic and psychosocial impacts of GBV, highlighting the need for better support systems. One major takeaway from these discussions is the urgent need to enhance support services for GBV survivors and to increase community awareness to combat stigma. The active participation and insightful contributions from community leaders and members demonstrate the importance of our ongoing engagement and advocacy. This event is part of #SieDiHub’s ongoing Nwanyibuihe Community Leadership project, with funding support from the Nigerian Women Trust Fund (NWTF) and the Ford Foundation.

"New power models are enabled by peer coordination and the agency of the crowd—without participation, they are just empty vessels." It can be used to drive positive or negative systemic change. 🤔 Did you know that this year, the United Nations (UN) "Convention on the Rights of the Child" (CRC) turns 35 years old? ⚓ This UN Convention, a part of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, is essential for our work at the World Child Forum. According to Article 12 of the 1989 CRC, ratified by all but one UN member state, “States Parties shall assure to the child who is capable of forming his or her own views the right to express those views freely in all matters affecting the child, the views of the child being given due weight in accordance with the age and maturity of the child.” The Committee on the Rights of the Child has identified child participation as one of the four fundamental and general principles of the Convention. I recently had the privilege of planning alongside attending the UNCSW68 side chat event at one of the satallite office HACEY Health Initiative . The event focused on increasing funding for Gender-based violence. As a Public Health professional specializing in gender issues, I was particularly interested in exploring this critical topic. While the event offered breathtaking visuals (check out the video!), I opted against sharing snippets of the discussions to maintain a safe space for all participants. However, the core issue resonated deeply: less than 1% of global donor funding is allocated specifically to prevent GBV. Even worse, only 5% of available funds reach those who need them most. This funding gap has devastating consequences for survivors and hinders efforts to prevent future violence. With this in mind, I have some key questions for gender experts in this space 🚀How can we leverage women's networks and community structures to mobilize local resources and address GBV issues? 🚀Moving beyond short-term grants and donations, what strategies can organizations employ to ensure long-term funding for GBV programs? 🚀How can organizations effectively showcase the impact of their GBV programs to attract sustainable funding? The UNCSW68 event served as a reminder of the urgent need to address GBV funding disparities. There's a need for collaboration and exploring innovative solutions, by doing this, we can work together to build a world where all communities have the resources they need to prevent and respond to GBV.
