⚽ Women’s team sports have given a voice and a sense of belonging to those previously overlooked by the sports industry. These dedicated fans, or 'originals,' have been instrumental in building the foundation of women's sports, overcoming challenges like lack of media coverage and social isolation. Recent research highlights how digital communities have helped these fans connect and strengthen their passion, which is now translating into real-world gatherings and venues like The Sports Bra in Portland and The Other Team in the UK. As women's sports grow, it's essential to balance expansion with authenticity, ensuring new strategies do not dilute the unique culture that attracted these fans in the first place. 👂 Listening to and collaborating with these originals is vital for sustainable growth. 📈 Furthermore, it's important to acknowledge and include the male coaches and supporters who have contributed significantly to this journey. Their involvement has been crucial, and they too should be recognised as part of the community that has driven the success of women's sports. It should not come as a surprise that in 2021, only about 5% of all TV sports coverage focussed on female athletes However,women’s sports received an average share of 15% of media coverage in 2022. And ,If the trend continue at this current rate of growth, women’s share of coverage should be close to 20% by 2025. And , since the needle of money and attention is moving slightly in the direction of women sports. I stumbled upon two cool things - 1. “Women's sports network” is the first 24/7 streaming network dedicated to Women's Sports to narrow the gap in media coverage for female athletes and female sports 2.The Sports Bra, this new sports bar in the US where everything is like a normal bar except the fact that only women athletes appear on the TVs. And ,with this niche, it has pulled in nearly $1 million in revenue in its first eight months of business! Now that’s cool! Just goes on to show women need spaces to hangout and watch women sports ! Yesterday, Robyn Feldstein and I had the opportunity to attend the Axios x Deep Blue Sports + Entertainment Business of Women's Sports TN50 Summit. Here is a brief rundown of my highlights and key takeaways: The Highlights: - Alexis Ohanian Sr. announcing that his firm 776 is sponsoring not only a women's track invitational but also supporting the expansion of The Sports Bra. These investments will (1) highlight track athletes in a new and powerful way and (2) bring women's sports to the forefront of entertainment in casual spaces across the country - iHeartMedia and Deep Blue Sports announcing an entire network of podcasts and broadcast initiatives to highlight and discuss women's sports on the DAILY. The Key Takeaways: - Research from COMN indicates that women's sports are growing and they are growing quickly. How companies utilize women's sports and women's sports FANS can also be different from how (traditionally) companies have leveraged men's sports and men's sports fans. - NIL is here and it's making waves. Athletes are looking to partner with companies that align with not only their identities as college athletes but also as prospective professional athletes. - Companies that are investing in women's sports are seeing great ROI. How we frame investing in women's sports needs to change though: we see it as "investing" in men's sports but a "loss" in women's sports. - Geographic markets need to be served differently in sports, finding a foothold in these markets also requires really taking hold of what makes each market unique. - Every woman athlete needs to consider what happens "next" because retirement may come out of nowhere. Having a game plan for the "after" helps to fortify the present. What does this all mean for a woman lawyer in sports? When I was speaking to one attendee, they said "You're a lawyer? That's not boring at all - you're like Ocean 11, a crucial member of any team." Women's sports and its growth is being done differently and in exciting new ways. A strong innovative strategy coupled with legal know-how from a team of lawyers who have the sports knowledge, passion and experience can be a real GAMECHANGER. I believe your unique perspective and experiences would contribute immensely to the conversation. When I just started organizing women's basketball championship back in 2015, with no support and no sponsorship, the most common response that I got was: "Oh well, who needs this women's sport? It doesn't exist. Women don't play sports". One interlocutor (a university dean, btw) even went as far as saying: "Our girls need to pop out babies, not chase some basketball around". Enragement aside, almost ten years later I'm happy to see that sports ecosystem comes to finally realise that women's sports are here to stay and in fact, technology and innovation are huge drivers for it. And I'm more than happy that among other things that I'm doing towards advancing women's sports and health, I'm contributing to this by authoring a section on Innovation in Women's Sports in a latest PULSAR report. Community, connection & authenticity is everything in #womenssport 🤯 Last week at #LeadersInSport we heard from Brady Stewart & Russell Wolff on Bay FC - a club that sold it’s 10,000 allocation of season tickets before they had even had a team… (WOW). Priding themselves on being rooted in community from the name, design, launch campaign all speaking to the history & culture of the Bay area. 👀 And then you compare it to the launch of the “BOS Nation…” the newest expansion team in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), who's launch campaign title was “Too many balls”... (Before I start, I love seeing the league & women's sport grow. I'm a big fan of disruptive marketing and women’s sport is the perfect place to try new things & be unique.) But the backlash on the launch & the name speaks for itself; 📢 "Y'all really said, 'we launching a women's soccer team. How can we make this about men?'" 😱 “worst name possible” A lot of fan’s comments have a deep issue with the sole inclusion of just the men’s sporting Boston history, completely ignoring the PWHL, WNBA … etc. 👉 As Sam Mewis said it “felt like an old iteration of women’s sports to me, from a time when we were fighting against men’s sports...It feels like women’s sports are past that. Women’s sports, and women’s sports fans have our own table now, and we don’t need to center men’s sports in our conversations anymore.” ❌ What should this tell you, in my opinion, is the one club (one city) mentality isn’t sticking with many women fans... women do (funnily enough) enjoy having their own team & history to celebrate. 🤝 Strategic authentic collaboration with men's sport is a must to see the space grow. Take what the likes of Ian Wright, Siya Kolisi, Andy Murray, Arsenal etc have done for women’s sport. Showing up, creating authentic content with these figures and generally engaging with women's sport. 🤦♀️ But to launch a whole campaign around a new team based off men's success?! Women's sport viewers approach fandom differently. They connect, engage & follow differently - it's time our approach is too. 🤔 According to one of the founders the "market research found that 60% of the people who plan to become dedicated fans of the city’s NWSL team are male....femininity isn’t part of who we’re trying to appeal to.” 🚩 This for me, is a massive red flag. Your number one target audience for a women's sport team should be WOMEN, and if the audience isn't there yet, help to grow it - to quote one of my fav films "build it & they will come." They have now removed the campaign & the website toomanyballs.com and apologised. But please let this be an eye-opening lesson for those looking to build in women's sport. #womenssport #womensfootball #nwsl
