Was an honour to be asked to speak at the latest Quartet Community Foundation event. I used the time to talk about the social model of disability. The social model of disability is the understanding that disability is something that is created by society.
This is because disabled people face barriers that stop them from taking part in society in the same way as non-disabled people. There are physical barriers that disabled people face. These could include things like:
- A sign that someone with a visual impairment can’t read.
- An inaccessible building without wheelchair ramps.
- A webpage with flashing animations that could trigger a seizure.
There are also social barriers or attitudinal barriers, like stereotypical beliefs that non-disabled people have about disabled people. Assuming that a disabled person “can’t do” something creates a barrier for that person.
According to the social model of disability, it’s these barriers that make a person disabled.
Disability isn’t something that exists inside your body or your mind. It’s something that is created by an inaccessible society. Here at Paul's Place, we work to break down these barriers every day.
"What do disabled people need to thrive?" This was the theme of our latest Behind the Scenes event for fundholders, which took place earlier this month at one of FACE's youth centres in South Gloucestershire.
A big thank you to Lynda Williams and Kayley Waller from Paul's Place and Debbie Teml from FACE, who spoke passionately about how they are supporting disabled people in their communities.
Access to our regular “Behind the Scenes” events across the South West is one of the many benefits of becoming a Quartet Community Foundation fundholder.

#CapacityBuilding presents unique challenges and opportunities, particularly when compared to the #nonprofit sector and #philanthropy. Witnessing foundations recognize and embrace their significant role with earnest responsibility is inspiring. I am particularly proud of how some of my clients in philanthropy are stepping up to this challenge with remarkable dedication.
One notable example involves a philanthropy client that traditionally limited #grant#application invitations to select grantee partners. However, in a commendable shift outlined in their latest strategic plan, they acknowledged the potential barriers their previous approach posed to broader community engagement and its need for alignment with foundation goals.
From now on, they've decided to open grant applications to all—an incredibly encouraging move (due to confidentiality and cannot reveal the foundation's name confidential). My client's transition to a more inclusive grantmaking process is a proactive step in philanthropy.
By prioritizing the voices of community members in decision-making, foundations can better understand and address areas where capacity building is most needed. This approach not only strengthens the community but also demonstrates the true essence of philanthropy. 👊 👏 🎊 #capacitystrengthening#organizationaldevelopment
Trust is at an all-time low in our country. Because trust is at the core of philanthropy efforts, it is imperative that health care philanthropy teams address this unfortunate trend. A lack of trust leads to patients not seeking care, not believing they are receiving the best care possible, not investing in their hospitals for fear their money won’t be used wisely and even unwillingness to help neighbors to effect change for the better.
There is, however, encouraging news. Those of us in philanthropy can combat this growing trend of distrust and move the needle to a more positive state. We are natural connectors and relationship builders. Let’s use our innate skills to turn this trend around.
