On this Friday morning I need to give a huge shoutout to Lunchclub. Rewind to Fall, 2020 (although who would want to??). I was an extrovert in lockdown, desperate to meet new people. My amazing mentor Jared Kligerman invited me to Lunchclub, and suddenly my world opened up. Initially I was meeting 3 or 4 new people per week from all over the world, although I've scaled back considerably. All I do is show up and be myself for 45 minutes, talking about my business if asked but otherwise just be genuinely curious about somebody else. The result? Even though I've never gone on to do a 'hard sell,' it's meant that people are able to know, like, and trust me within that time, and many have become treasured clients, business partners, referral partners, colleagues, and dear friends. Don't believe me? Whilst I've been broadly aware of the case for years, last night, I finally managed to watch the first episode of "Mr Bates v The Post Office". Like everyone else who's watched it, I, too, am filled with anger and frustration about the whole thing. While it's hard to know what senior people understood and knew about what was happening on the ground and, importantly, when they learned about it - for all the declarations of "I didn't know" or "it wasn't me, guv!", we can be sure of one thing: the executive is responsible for creating the conditions and the environment that allowed this to happen. And you should have known! What happened at The Post Office may be unique to them and their context, but several things should serve as a lesson to ALL directors and board members. 1. No one was listening or interested in understanding and dealing with the realities on the ground. Those who did know were more interested in self-preservation than in achieving the right outcomes. "It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it." If something similar was happening in your organisation, how would you know? Are you relying on people passing it up the line? 2. The people on the ground (the sub-postmasters), clearly being gaslighted by the 'organisation' (probably meaning those with a vested interest), could not make collective sense of what was happening because they were prevented from doing so. It took individuals to organise and find ways to share their experiences with one another before a clear picture emerged. How are your people encouraged and supported in making sense of complex and ambiguous situations? Aligned action cannot happen without it. 3. Fear dominated (and with justifications). People had nowhere to go and no way of raising concerns or suspicions of system failures and wrongdoing - and more importantly, they were terrified of losing their jobs for speaking up. Today, organisations may be more focused on psychological safety than they were a few years ago, but where power distance exists (as it clearly does in all organisations), you need more than an open-door policy.
