The biggest geothermal project in the world, The Geysers in California, is hardly visible from the air. You need to really zoom in on Google maps to see it. 🔎 This is a quote from an article I read recently and it got me thinking. The fact that geothermal heat and power plants has such a small footprint is both a blessing and a curse. It's obviously great for the environment and for neighbouring inhabitants. But it's not always working in our favour as we work to increase awareness of geothermal energy. You could live close to a plant and hardly know about it! The installed capacity of The Geysers is 700-900 MW (different sources give somewhat different numbers), which is huge. That´s roughly 20-25% of the total installed capacity of the US, 3.9 GW. What do you think about geothermal's low-visibility factor: a blessing or a curse? #energy #renewableenergy #geothermal

Superhot rock #geothermal energy has the potential to meet long-term demands for zero-carbon, always-on power – but a number of technical hurdles stand in the way of development, deployment, and commercialization of this revolutionary energy source. Earlier this year, CATF + Geothermal Research Cluster - GEORG convened leaders from across the geothermal innovation space for a workshop at the Iceland Geothermal Conference to uncover gaps in five critical technology areas. The workshop dove into the details of reports outlining relevant technical advancements and remaining challenges for superhot rock energy deployment – information that will be invaluable in informing public and private funding. CATF is helping companies share data and findings so that the broader geothermal industry "can learn from each other and do it better, faster, cheaper." Our #Trendoftheweek this week looks at geothermal potential in Europe 📍 , specifically re-purposing mature oil and gas regions. Italy is known as one of the early adopters of utilising geothermal energy to produce electricity from its aquifers. It has 33 active geothermal plants in the Tuscany region which account for 1.6-1.8% of the total electric energy production in Italy. With the increased demand for energy and movement away from traditional coal and hydrocarbon-based production methods, the need to increase methods such as geothermal is undeniable. But where else do we find this renewable natural resource? A key component of assessing areas for geothermal potential is the geothermal gradient. This is how quickly heat increases as we drill into the earth. A gradient of 25-30°C/km is typical in the Earth’s crust, but this can vary depending on numerous factors. Geothermally active areas in Italy reach between 45-135°C/km meaning we can access more heat with less drilling expense. When we look at the subsurface database in #bMark™, we can filter down to existing subsurface asset locations with abnormally high geothermal gradients to screen for regions of potential interest. This map shows the great potential to expand the reach of geothermal energy across historically active hydrocarbon producing regions of Europe. #upstreamanalytics #upstreamintelligence #geothermal #geothermalpotential ✔ Contact us today to see how bMark™ can empower your workflows: https://lnkd.in/ePE8nXrp

OIL, GAS AND THE GEOTHERMAL RENAISSANCE Last week I attended Europe’s largest #geothermalenergy conference in Offenburg, Germany. The show was twice the size of last year’s. It was great to meet so many familiar people from the geothermal community. Notably, just about everyone who had been to the conference in previous years, commented on the shear scale of the show in 2024. 50 to 100% larger than last year, according to many. This truly is evidence of the expansion of the #geothermal industry. Something else which was obvious, was the volume of people and service companies from #oilandgas. For someone with an Oil & Gas background there was a great deal of familiarity about GeoTHERM expo & congress in Offenburg. The same day, the Wall Street Journal published an article about #oilandgas companies investing in geothermal startup s and technologies. Notably, last week it was a $244 million investment in Fervo Energy from Devon Energy. The trend will, I’m sure continue and as the geothermal business expands, more people, like me (perhaps not exactly like me) will begin to migrate from hydrocarbon to hot rocks. It’s incredibly encouraging to see geothermal being researched, developed and adopted by companies with enough knowledge and financial backing to make a difference. We, at Primeval Energy Ltd will certainly be embracing the processes and technologies from Oil & Gas to solve some of our geothermal challenges. The geothermal renaissance is being financed, in part, by the very well-placed Oil & Gas business and I think that’s perfect. #energytransition #cleanenergy

🔵 EGEC Geothermal market report from 2022 showing geothermal plants that are in operation, planned and currently in construction. Interesting to see Italy, Turkey, Germany and Iceland in the lead (as expected based on history) but also re-assuring that other areas have plans in place. Let's hope that we can keep building the momentum and optimize the economic models to make access and dispatch of geothermal energy a lot more present. #geothermalenergy #europe #energyfuture #electricity

https://lnkd.in/dPr_xQJ9 “ #first #geothermal #power #plant in the world :- in #Tuscany, #Italy in the early twentieth century. (year #1913) 🔥🔥🔥 “…The creation of the first geothermal power plant was thanks to Prince Piero Ginori #Conti of Trevignano.” “…The plant was gradually added to throughout the years and now Larderello is now formed of 34 plants operated by Italian company Enel Green Power (EGP). The capacity of the site is now #800MW, and has helped Italy become the sixth-largest producer of geothermal energy in the world, as it forms nearly 2% of Italy’s energy mix. “…Geothermal power was born there: but the world would wait until #1958 for the second geothermal plant in Wairakei, New Zealand.” https://lnkd.in/dtQc726z
