As I delve into my dissertation focused on short goal kicks and pressing strategies, I'm keen to highlight the simple yet effective tactics employed by my favorite coach, Thomas Frank, in this often overlooked aspect of the game.
Frank typically utilizes a 4-2 structure and often seeks to find the fullback. However, understanding how the defending team presses in such situations is crucial to understanding his approach.
Ten Hag adopts a 4-1 pressing structure, initially positioning his wingers between the FB and CB. This placement prioritizes the fullback while ensuring readiness to press the CB if the attacking team successfully reaches the far CB. Given the challenge for Højlund to shift and press the far CB in such situations, the positioning of the winger becomes crucial, as they are tasked with pressing the distant CB.
In the first scene, Frank instructed Jensen to drop off for a wall pass, drawing out Garnacho. Similarly, Yarmolyuk executed a similar move with Mainoo, leading to finding Roerslev (RB) behind Rashford, who is obviously one of United’s main problems in this phase.
In the subsequent scene, a back pass was directed to Flekken. Meanwhile, Ajer (CB) dropped deeper, effectively drawing the attention of the winger Antony, as Højlund couldn't shift back in time. Consequently, Flekken effortlessly located Collins (LB). Notably, Ten Hag was observed admonishing Antony during this moment.
In the last scene against De Zerbi, who uses 2-1-2 scheme with free FBs, the “1” is between Brentford 2 6ers, whilst the front two: one is pressing GK with a curved run closing the passing lane to one of the CBs, and the other one (Lallana) trying to maintain cover shadowing one of the 6ers (Janelt) and also ready to press the free CB. Notably, Frank instructed his CBs to get wider, complicating the task for the front two. Consequently, Janelt managed to evade Lallana’s shadow, initiating a wall pass to Ajer (LCB), then to Collins (LB). The sequence culminated in two one-touch passes from Lewis-Potter and Toney to find Jensen.
