Super fun time speaking with current marketing students at University of Portland - including a few students I’ve previously had in class!
Hopefully my hot takes weren’t too hot 😄
Some highlights:
- Don’t blanket add people on LinkedIn; invest in relationships with contacts you make like you would anyone else!
- Your grades don’t matter as much as your ability to demonstrate responsibility and follow through (which more often than not ends up being reflected in your grades anyways).
- Leverage college as an opportunity to learn how to think critically and connect with folks who hold different perspectives and experiences than you. Empathy and wisdom will take your career higher and farther than solely focusing on being a high performer by yourself. We need to be able to serve alongside others!
Marketing & Entrepreneurship Undergrad @ University of Portland
So grateful and thankful for our University of Portland Alumni (Daniel McGarry, Andrew Hansen, and James Lung) who came to speak on our Marketing Panel for our Professional Development course in the Pamplin School of Business. What a fun time it was seeing everyone come together and working with other students to put this all together! Go Pilots!
Besides that, it is interesting to hear these words from someone like Feynman, who was at the forefront of important, groundbreaking discoveries (and not by some people who are drowned in their egos and titles and probably not as prolific as him), questioning such titles and honors, that they might be superficial, it struck me that in the relatively recent history of human (compared to H. sapiens life), such honoring and titles in their current form are happening very very lately!
Considering more than 2000 years of brilliant written history of science and philosophy, from Aristotle to Avecinna to Galileo to Newton, we have such titles only in our modern history!
Are we commercializing everything, even in science? Or making up titles and awards day by day? And if yes, what is lacking (or, better say, fading away) inside us that we are compensating for by this?
(It’s not innuendo; I am really seeking an answer!)

Love this, and knowing Jeri, I'll bet she learned at least 3-4 things that will improve Cengage's offerings.
Here at Pragmatic Institute, when we train product managers for other companies, we focus extensively on what we call NIHITO (Nothing Important Happens In The Office). Its a borderline mandate that product managers get out into the market and listen directly to customers for met and unmet needs. That a Chief People Officer is practicing NIHITO speaks to Cengage's customer focus. Way to go!
Senior Account Executive I, Higher Education at Cengage
Recently I was joined by Jeri Herman, Chief People Officer, for a day at the University of Vermont. We connected with instructors across all disciplines, engaging in discussions regarding academic integrity and student success. We shared in the power and joy of learning - both for students and from each other. It was great to experience the Cengage Group Credo in action and share our passion for education!
It has been such an honor to work with the CCBA team over the last year to align two innovative models- community college bachelors and competency-based education.
When stars align, the best outcomes for students are reached!
New research results out this week from Debra Bragg and Iris Palmer highlight the success of South Texas College and our C-BEN board member, Emma Lemus-Miller, PhD and C-BEN Consultant Angie Walker presented with Cheryl Cicotti, CCBA on how to bring the two models together.
“In 2021, there were 2,477 CCB students enrolled across seven community colleges in Texas. About 75 percent of these students were enrolled at South Texas College..."
Key Findings
🔎 Students in CCB programs are, on average, older than those in associate degree-granting programs at community colleges or students at traditional colleges and universities. However, students in CCB programs in Texas are slightly younger than those in other states.
🔎 CCB students who enrolled and graduated in Texas are predominantly female, Latine, and recipients of Pell Grants. A phenomenal 80 percent of graduates received a Pell Grant.
🔎 2018 graduates of Texas CCB programs are earning a median wage of $44,102 three years after graduation, which is comparable to Texans with bachelor’s degrees writ large.

Angie Napper Walker, C-BEN Consultant is currently at the Community College Baccalaureate Association conference this week!
Visit the C-BEN table to talk with Angie about CBE and her presentation, "CBE and Community College Baccalaureate Programs: Enabling the Pathway to Degrees," co-presented with Cheryl Cicotti, Project Director at CCBA and Emma Lemus-Miller, PhD, Program Chair for the Organizational Leadership Program at South Texas College.
Community college baccalaureates (CCBs) and competency-based education (CBE) are a powerful combination, offering accessible, affordable, and quality pathways to degrees. Angie and Cheryl will explore how CCBs and CBE complement each other, enabling learners to seamlessly stack their learning into degree programs.
Don't miss out on this session to glean insights from institutions that have successfully implemented CCBs using CBE, and to learn strategies for building pathways to student success and employability.
