The transition from Gothic to Glazing architecture is one such journey, marked by significant philosophical and artistic shifts, particularly during the Renaissance era. The Gothic period (12th-16th century) emphasized verticality and light, with soaring spires, ribbed vaults, and stained glass windows that filled churches with divine illumination. Its architecture was driven by religious symbolism, with pointed arches and flying buttresses allowing for expansive interiors. The Renaissance (14th-17th century), however, heralded a shift toward humanism, balance, and proportion. Natural materials for space architecture, like wood or even "regolith-clay" plaster, were the subject of my white paper for the decadal survey of the space architecture comunity. I am convinced that life in space will require living materials. Not only because we can grow them in space, but also because they meet the mental and emotional needs of our lives, which are undeniably enhanced by the use of wood in interiors. 🌱🌍🚀 Wood creates: - a calming appearance 🧘♂️ - an antiseptic surface 🧼 - a highly durable finish 🛠️ - easy to install and modify 🔧 And there’s so much more to say about wood! Louis Kahn’s quote, "The Sun does not realize how wonderful it is until after a room is made," captures the profound connection between architecture and light, and how space shapes our experience of nature. Kahn sir suggests that sunlight, in its purest form, may go unnoticed. But when it enters a room—framed by walls, doors, and windows—it becomes something more meaningful, shaping shadows, illuminating textures, and bringing a sense of warmth and liveliness to the space. The room acts as a canvas that reveals the sun’s potential, making the light tangible and purposeful.
